once again, this ugly myth raises its head. this thing is like a hydra, it just won't die.
reminds me of something that happened to me about ten years ago. i worked at a company and i overheard this guy telling his buddies he was going to go buy this old corvette from some widow. he was going to get this one because it was one of the metal body cars before they went to fiberglass. i offered to bet him a paycheck that if it was a real corvette, then it had a fiberglass body, but if it had a steel body it wasn't a corvette. he and his three buddies looked at me blankly and i never heard of it again.
never happened. EVER. not on the assembly line anyway. there were a few mock-ups or prototypes built with a metal body. ALCOA built the XP-882 (i believe) completely out of aluminum to show G.M. it could be done. at great expense, i might add. their loss, they built it and now G.M. owns it.

The original Grand Sport racing Corvettes were built with special light weight metal bodies, but these were not production vehicles

There may be some overlap and confusion with Ferrari who made the original 308 GTC in fibreglass before reverting to metal.
