Default HUD parts - cheaper than you think

The prices have gone down for a HUD retrofit?

I went to the parts department of my local (WA) Chevy dealership to check on the prices of the heads up display (HUD) components on a 1999 coupe.

$360 for the projector
$80 for the switch
$35 for the bezel

all new.

The old price for the projector was $1,100 per:
http://joshker99.home.comcast.net/hudinstall2.htm (can you figure out my next weekend project? )

think twice before you bid over $400 for a projector on E-bay.

BTW - Josh - if you're out there - I need to buy that $35 harness from you (sent e-mail - awaiting response)

the cluster or dash pad?

both are fairly easy to remove, just do a search on "HUD Install" and you should find it.

when I originally installed my HUD, I had to wait for the HUD bezel to come it. (ordered it from the dealer), while waiting for it, I got impatient and cut my dash following the outline on the bottom.

well............ I cut too far back and had a 1/4'' gap between the bezel and dash pad.

long story short, while at corvettes@ carlisle a couple years back I purchased another dash pad, and installed it into my car while it was on the fun field!

so, the removal of the dash is not that complicated.

Thanks for your post. I almost paid too much for a used one on FleeBay. I just got a quote from Sport Chevrolet,Silver Spring MD

$333.00 for the projector
$125.90 for the switch
$27.53 for the bezel
TOTAL: $486.43

I got another quote from Win Kelly Chevrolet, Clarksville, MD

$278.34 for the projector
$105.13 for the switch
$26.70 for the bezel
TOTAL: $410.17

If you buy this stuff from gmpartsdirect.com, the total will be $900 with shipping and ***handling***

Can one of you post the part numbers and what about the 11 pin cable or does it come with the projector? Thanx, Jeff

Part numbers are in poster's link

I think these should still be good for my '04 coupe. If anyone else knows better, please tell me soon.

HUD projector 10279814
HUD projector bezel 10425223
HUD switch 12198648

I haven't yet figured out where I'm going to get the harness. Does anyone know how to make them?

I think Bob at Ken Fichtner or Gene at Fred Bean could beat or match those numbers, and they are both Forum vendors..

Sent out requests to both Bob and Gene. I'll post them here if I get responses. Thanks.

Many people have said that the HUD shows just fine on a stock vette windshield. I read somewhere that the HUD windshields go for $2,500!

Nope. In the link below, he shows pics of his done without the windshield in direct sunlight.

And for everyone looking for instructions on how to remove the dash, he had it in his original post.....http://joshker99.home.comcast.net/hudinstall2.htm

Just talked with Gene at Fred Beans. He is selling the system for $199+$76+$24 = $299!!!! To think that a used one from a wrecked car just went for $450 on EBay!

Is there a car build date that gives a clue to whether you need a new HUD-friendly cluster?

299 That's a great price. I'm jumping on that if I can find a used gauge cluster.
