That was a perfect combo of WOT and idle.
Now my 04 MN6 with just the GHLs is really loud. I didn't put the
X-pipe on (not enough time) and thought I could live with the
"burbling" sound. At highway cruising it is fine but any kind of
acceleration and particularly idling, it borders on obnoxious.

If you have the Bullets (6" cans) the idle and WOT should not be anywhere near obnoxious, mine's not.
Yep, the GHL Bullet and Magnaflow X on my 01 A4 was mellow but
WOT was great. I went from Corsa Touring to Corsa Indy to
GHL.
I figured the pup cats made that more mellow than is should have been.
But I tell ya', as soon as I started my stock 04 MN6, I could tell and
everyone else said that it was far more aggressive than the stock
01. So when the GHLs went on without the X pipe, I anticipated
an aggressive growl but not this much. I'll put the X on and see.
