No doubt in my mind that if you had a radar detector, he would have gone ahead and written the ticket

Some people have funny rationalizations about things...the point of a radar detector is that he would not likely have even been pulled over if he was paying attention to it. It would have signaled radar in the area, you would have slowed down, still paid no tickets, and saved 10 minutes of your time.
I don't use a radar detector unless driving across country as I don't usually speed more than 5-10 over the limit. That said, they do have their place...

the only state that i know the are Illegal in is VA
As far as radar detectors go, I put mine right beside the mirror just below the tinted area and hard-wired it in, so you really couldn't see it. On the few occasion that i thought I might get stopped, i took in down, put it behind the passenger seat, and pushed to cord back into the panned just above the glass and wiped of the circles on the glass. That took about 15 seconds to do and there was no sign of it. With the dark window tint, the cop wouldn't be able to see what I was doing even if he was right behind me.
for the record, my 8500 saved me from a laser going about 20 over the limit in Houston. It went off and I was able to slow down before i got around a turn and saw the cop

Thanks for saying that before I could "rationalize" saying it.
And furthermore, had he been hit with instant on, and not had time to slow to within the limit, his radar detector would have told him nothing more than that he was about to get a ticket.
BTW, I too use a radar detector. The point of the radar detector is to tell if the LEO is in the area and clocking other drivers in the vicinity. If so, then you want advanced warning. If he zaps you at a speed from which you cannot slow down quick enough from, its all over. No detector will save you from instant on, and if it detects laser, it probably means that you have already been painted.

I got gunned a few weeks ago doing 63 in a 40. I pulled over into a parking lot and shut the car off and waited for about 30 seconds before he pulled up to me. He hadn't even come out and put his lights on yet. I knew that I was in the wrong and that he was going to come so I figured that I would beat him to the punch and play it cool. I apologized immediately upon his arrival and asked how fast I was going. I think that he appreciated my effort. He gave me a no seat belt, for which I thanked him greatly!

I had just arrived in Washington after being transferred out from Virginia Beach and was driving my modded 79 Z28 at the time. Had pulled from a stoplight and started to accelerate around another car into the fast lane when I saw the trooper pull into the median and knew then I was had. I kept going for another mile or so before he caught up to me then doing 60 or so and he asked for the lic, reg, ins stuff as usual and asked me how fast I was going.
I told him I think it was 72 or there abouts. He laughed a bit and said that his radar said 71. It is a 55 zone.
He came back after doing the normal check me out in the system thing and wrote me up for 60 in a 55.
He told me that he was only citing for the 60 because only 1 in 50 drivers on average would tell him the truth. I didn't complain and said thanks after he reminded me two times that he was saving me $138 in fines. The 5 over ticket cost $40.

He checked my record (clean) and let me go with a verbal warning. Polite and honest apparently worked.
For what its worth, he seemed to do a quick look inside to see if there was a radar detector. If there was, I doubt I would have gotten off. Saved a ticket and $400 for a Valentine.

If you get caught here in Virginia with a radar detector you might as well bend over and kiss your own azz goodby...

Great you got out of it!!!
But if LEO was using LASER you wouldn't have been warned until it was too late anyway if you had a Valentine or any other detector. LASER is instantaneous and if Valentine/Escort or what ever detector you have went off for LASER, LEO already had your speed registered on his LASER unit.
From my personal hands on experience, so I trust it cuz I saw it and did it...
I actually stopped and chatted and did a "field" test with a Brea PD with LASER. He told me they aim at the front licence plate when they check you with LASER, so unless your detector is mounted on the nose of your car, it wouldnt go off. OR if he was a bad aim and it reflected off the hood it would hit your detector. It was very interesting and very informative playing with the LASER and having the LEO show me and letting me use it on other cars. Now its completely different for RADAR, it is detected and you are warned sometimes miles in advance so you can slow down.

I see a bunch of you guys are supporting the radar detector theory and thats cool but let me give you another angle on it.
I stated earlier traffic tickets arent really my thing but being a cop I do write them from time to time. I see radar detectors in cars frequently and having one or not doesnt really sway my decision to write a ticket or give a warning.
I can see people scrambling to hide them when they are stopped through the rear window or useing their own side view mirrors to see in the car and its really kind of amusing. Its good for a laugh anyway and I dont take it the least bit personally nor am I "outraged".
Here in Illinois we use lasers and radar guns both. The radar gun I use is the trigger type. I hit the button when I see a possible speeder and the gun goes active giving me the cars speed at the same time your detector goes nuts. Thats cool and all your warned, but its really to late.
Another thing we do is drive around with the gun turned on at all times, that gets the oblivious speeder but another reason is to make the guys with detectors slow down, thus slowing traffic down in general.
Anyway thats my 2 cents. Enjoy these great machines just dont drive stupid.
