Ran out of Gas today
ARRRGGGGG!!!! That's never happened to me before. Of course it was no fault of my own, its this faulty fuel sender thing. How does this not merit a recall?? Not knowing how much gas is in your tank seems like a serious safety issue especially if you are traveling down an interstate. My car was fine and then without warning it wouldn't work any longer. Luckily I was barely away from home. BTW, people said that the dic would work along with the fuel gauge but that is BS, I ran out of gas with the Dic showing 45 miles left. Thats like 2 gallons of gas. What do you guys do to fix this problem, I know some people mentioned Techron. Car was showing 1/8th tank left when it ran out of gas. I guess some of you really really love corvettes because I gotta tell you, I love my C5 but this is downright obnoxious on a car that sells for 50K new. The column lock is rediculous too. Well I'm done venting. Please let me know how I can make this happen less often.

Don't let your tank get below half full and use your trip meter for each fill-up. It's a PITA, but better safe than sorry.

well yes. the fuel gauge issue is a known problem, as u even stated in your post. so i must ask, if u knew it is a problem, why did u push it so close? anyway, not sure why a recall isnt done, im sure GM has convinced the recall demanding gurus its ok. kinda like the outside mirrors that give out and swing freely notorisously. its been going on with c5s for 7 yrs now but when the 02 dodge rams came out, it only took months for them to figure out they did it and chrysler did a recall for them saying outside mirrors that spin or break free from their adjustment isnt safe while driving. comes down to GM cares or GM doesnt care. GM just likes the money, not our satisfaction with the product.

Yes I agree, GM apparently doesn't care about our money, so why does everyone keep buying the product? Like I said, I love my car, but I'm seriously doubting whether I would buy another. GM wants their customers to get killed and then thinks they will come and buy again. I let my tank get this low because its never been a problem, it was at 1/8th tank, the dic said 45 miles left. If I can't trust my fuel gauge, I can't really drive my car. I don't know about the rest of you, but this is my daily driver, not a hobby car that I can deal with this crap in. I don't have the time to refill every time it gets to 1/2 a tank nor should I have to. I know someone said techron was supposed to fix it or some other fix that makes it less of a problem but I don't remember exactly.

The column lock and fuel gauge are the two most aggravating aspects of the C5 since GM refused to admit there was a problem for years and never fixed the problems during it's entire 8 year run.
My C5 is my daily driver too. I put in a CLB to deal with the column lock and seldom let my tank get below 1/4 tank. I always reset my mileage odometer between fill ups to know how many miles I've driven. These steps work for me.

Well you got me worried enought that I went and filled up Igor (the CE) on 1/8 tank. But now I'm reallt curious! And then what is the accuracy of the mileage readout on the DIC if the gas gauge is corrupt?

how do you guys go by the trip odometer? I mean, it varies depending on how you drive. If you drive mostly city, it will be lower than if you drive mostly highway. Mine was at 332 miles when it ran out of gas. I guess I should just always fill it up at 300 miles on the trip odometer? Someone on another thread says he throws in a bottle of 2 cycle oil every so often and that has cured the problem. I may try that.

I"m assuming the trip mileage should be correct. It doesn't interact with the gas gauge. I would have assumed if the car was out of gas, that the dic would have read range as 0 or 5 miles or something like that and not 45 miles.

I have an 01, and when the DIC fuel gauge reads less than 60 miles,,I get a warning on the DIC everytime that says "Reserve Fuel" without fail...I usually fill up anyway at just a tic lower than a quarter of a tank..I don't like running the tank that empty

i'm with the guys who set the trip.
one of our C5s does the OTHER way.......it suddenly starts dinging and saying low fuel when we HAVE gas.
either way.........GM should have fixed the fuel gauge issues. somehow i doubt it happens on all their vehicles...so why is it "ok" to leave it "wrong" on the vette for so many years? things that make me go HUMMMMMMMM.

Mine is a 2004 with 12K miles on it. Bought it new in January 04. I have perfect calibration on my fuel gauge . . . reads better than any car I have owned in 47 years I have owned cars.
You forgot to tell us what year car you have . . . this is important

I had my 99 for 5 years and never had a problem...
Now have the 04 Z and it is my understanding that they fixed the problem in 04..... they are using the ame fuel system as the C6

my car is a 1999 vert. Make no mistake, its not like it kept telling me and telling me and I didn't listen. The thing was at an 1/8th of a tank and ran out of fuel.

The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. I could have sworn I had an eighth of a tank. Flat out ran out of gas! My first time also. Now, I fill up at half a tank.

Try the Techron, try switching to a different brand of gas, or keep the tank full. Otherwise, it may take new sending units.
