Hi Guys, I dont want to start bashing the Viper since this is a Vette forum but
I was curious as to which car would win in the 1/4 mile? I got 2 friends, 1 with a Viper and the other with a Z06. We have been going back and forth and my friend with the Viper finally accepted the challenge. We are supposed to cruise down to the track this weekend and find out. I think drag race will be close but in the twisties I would think the Z06 would be a better driver over a 93 Viper. Newer 96 up Viper would probably be diferrent. Anyway, what do you guys think? :cheers:

The real answer is that the better driver will win. The cars are close enough in power-to-weight that the guy that gets the best launch and then stays hooked best on the shifts will prevail.

Pre 97 vipers put out 400hp/490 ft. lbs of torque at the flywheel. And those are conservative numbers with the torque, Ive heard of vipers putting down 460-470 rwtq. The viper weighs a couple hundred more lbs at around 3400, and has taller gearing with 1st stretched out to 65 mph.

The Z is lighter with shorter gearing, but theres no getting around the torque of the viper. The early viper will run a mid 12 from 112 to 114 mph stock. As for handling and such, the viper didnt have ABS until 2000, they had poor stopping distances. The Z should take the Viper in the corners but not by much. Should be a really even race in the quarter mile.

I had a choice of getting a 96 RT10 for $10k more than the used 02 Z06, I chose the Z. Better fuel economy, ergonomics, handling, for less. The viper looks better than the Z in my opinion though.

How do some of you guys come up with crazy figures! The viper had 400 hp with thw same tq. of 400. Motor trend had the viper running 13.00s at about 109 mph! The 01 z06 would hand the 93 viper its a--! Period!! :party: :party:

Been there done that... I won both times. First, I was driving my mom's stock 99 vert with the top down and ran the dude fom 2nd to fourth. His car sounded like butt and I had him by two cars. My mom's car ran 13.1's @ 107 mph stock. The second time I was in the Z and went from third on the "track" I had him by four cars at the top of fourth. The older vipers look cool, but were good for low 13's. The GEN II's are a different story. A Z06 can cover the 1/4 mile just as quick, but as the speed keeps going up the Viper runs away b/c of all that torque.

Guys, I am happy to say the Z06 won but just barely. My friend used the tracktion control and I believe thats what made the difference. The Z had him buy a car length buy 2nd gear. If it would have been a little longer race the Viper would have had him for sure. The Viper had a hard time hooking up.

Well if the guy in the z06 had the traction control on and it went on it would of slowed him down a lot.....you should know this! Unless the driver in the viper just didn't know his car very well and kept spinning them.....

For some reason it looked to me like the tracktion control actually helped my friend out. The Viper could not stick.

Gen 1 Vipers typically dyno around 370 to 380 rwhp and 430 to 440 rwtq. I've owned an '02 Z06 and now I have a '95 RT/10 Viper. The Viper comes out of the hole harder than my Z06 did only because there is substantially more torque at a lower RPM. I would think in a quarter mile race, the Z06 would probably edge out the Viper because of the better gearing and lighter weight. But they'd be real close. As far as the better all around car, the Z06 wins hands down. A Z06 you can live with on a daily basis, the Gen 1 Viper you can not. Hell, my Viper doesn't even have outside door handles or windows. :lol: People buy cars for different reasons. The Viper is different in every aspect. It's like the Cobra's of the '60's. It's a rude, crude machine, nothing civil about it. The Z06 is very civil compared to the early Viper. As far as Motor Trend times, do not believe that is what an early Viper is limited to. Those are LT4 times. I've owned a '96 LT4 Vette and trust me, the '95 Viper I have would've eaten my '96 Vette alive. I remember back in '92 a local guy brought his brand new Viper to Beaver Springs Dragway. I think it had around 200 miles on it. He ran the car 3 times and his best was a 12.6 at 114 MPH.

The old vipers 400 h/p only ran low 13teens!! I ve seen at least 5 back in those days go down the strip in phoeniz stock low 13teens! 108 mph! The 01 Z would crush the old viper in every form of racing! :hurray: :party:

I agree with you guys. I believe the 01 Z06 would be a better choice if you are comparing it to a 92-95 r/t Viper. However, the Viper does have that
"ah man check that out" responce. But the Z06 is a bang for the buck.
