Default 176MPH in 6th gear, 2001

My son took my 2001, unmodified with a zip tie mod and K&N filter, without my permission in January. On Saturday he admitted to me that he hit 176MPH at 3AM on I-295 just west of Jacksonville, FL. Needless to say, I was angry, and moreso, since he had a passenger that witnessed it. He did this in 6th gear, by the way. I have no reason to doubt him, because he is fearless and thinks he is immortal.

He routinely rides a jet ski at 70+MPH, jumps 15' into the air in the surf, and fell off once at that speed on a local creek and missed hitting a tree along the bank by inches- didn't slow him down a bit. He fixed the hole in the jet ski and is back at it again.

The very next day he took it again (we were still out of town), lost control switching lanes on a cold day, and sideswiped another car. No injuries, but $2000 damage to my left rear panel, wheel and door. Since he lived with us at the time and was not on our insurance policy, neither insurance (mine or his) paid the claim. Any person, child, girlfriend, etc. that has a license MUST be listed as a driver on your policy, if they live with you. I'll bet many of you don't know that. I did, and gave him strict orders to never drive any of our three cars. Lots of good that did! It did pay for the repair, under PIP protection (up to $10,000), on the other vehicle. Good ole Dad had to pay the $2000, and he has not paid me back yet. I'm thankful that the accident was at 50MPH, not 176MPH!!!

Moral: take your keys with you, and NEVER trust your children. :mad

Believe the whole trusting the child thing varies from child to child.

Well, he could have hit top speed in 5th, then shifted to 6th thinking he could push it further. So yes, he probably could have seen an indicated 176 in 6th, but he wouldn't have gone any faster.

As to his taking the car without permission, I really feel for you. Both my girls are too young to worry about that anytime soon, but I dread the day they are old enough to drive.

I've seen 170mph in 6th gear with my '01 Coupe, but that is with 4.10 gears.

Sounds like you're doing a good job raising your kid.

My 02 Z06 put down 360rwhp bone stock and would only hit 178 mph in 5th gear @ 7.2krpm with no passenger and the headlights down! Note: Found that my rev limiter was set for 9k rpms in 5th gear when used ls1 edit to reprogram after modifications.

Yes, been their, done that. Just got back from a seven day inside passage cruise to Alaska, "Unbelievable" but you can bet we locked up the keys to the Z06 and GS300. Kids all learn, some fast, some slow. Hope your Z06 comes back even better then before. :chevy

When I was younger - I liked starting some of my dad's collectibles in the garage. The one time I was in his super low mile 76 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible and accidentally activated the wipers. Well..... when he saw some wiper patterns in the dust, I caught royal hell. I wouldn't have even dreamed of moving the car - just wanted to see how she ran!! The comment about no respect is accurate - I respected the fact that these were his toys, and he valued them a great deal.

Glad he wasn't hurt or killed. Sorry to hear about your car. We all have our tales of our mis-spent youth. Most of us have been lucky enough to tell them. I don't know what your son does, or how much he makes, but show him the value of a dollar (when it comes to paying for the repairs). Make him earn the money (and if possible work him like a slave). It a good object lesson. For example. Tell him you will credit him $10 or $20 for mowing the grass, then find a bunch of elderly folks in and around your area that need the grass cut, lawns cleared, etc... (Heck you are already out the money) and volunterr your sons services for free to them.

Then have him cut grass every weekend for the rest of the summer @ $20 a lawn thats like 100 lawns he'd have to mow. If you can line up 4 lawns per weekend you can tie up his entire Saturday (and perhaps Sunday). You can help out some folks who really need this done, and you can give him a little object lesson....

You can apply this to an number of chores that need to be done in and around your neighborhood.

If he can actually earn some funds, even better. But nothing will make you kick yourself when you have a mountain of debt that eats up all your spare time for a year or so, and every free moment is taken up with "activities" organized by your parents...

Not a chance did he even come close to 176 in 6th gear. And if he had a friend as a witness the next step would be to give them both a hair sample test. Get my drift.

if one of my kids (18+) did that, it would be the house that I would lock them out of, not just the car. :yesnod:

Most kids are not bad they just have bad judgement. I disabled my Zo6 on a recent trip out of town and will again when the wife and I go overseas. The potential perpetrators always get mad at me, but I see them alive when we return.

I have never seen past 150 on the Z06, and sped past 100 only 4 times this summer, and it was late at night with ZERO cars around. To me, the risk of getting caught/getting into an accident is enought to disuade me from doing anything stupid to my car. Even though I am only 19, I have more common sense than most 20 somethings. I put to much work into my car to have it ruined.

Also, my parents know I don't speed normally and trust me completely. Even though it is MY car, they know I will not do anything stupid because they realize how much I care for my car. That and the fact if I ever did get a ticket/accident I would be walking for the rest of my life.
