another wheel and tire question from a newbie
I just bought a 97 the tires are balder than my 75 year old dad and the wheels have more rash than an unchanged baby. I can get a killer deal on new wheels and tires. The wheels would be a square setup at 18x10.5 w/56mm offset. The wheels would be wrapped in 275/35ZR-18 NITTO NT555 G2 XL. Would I run into any problems with this setup? TIA!

I'm assuming you have active handling (AH) on your '97? (If memory serves, some features were individual options which in later years became standard equipment; I can't recall if AH was one of those items.) Assuming your car is so equipped, conventional wisdom is that the rear tires need to be a bigger circumference than the front lest it cause AH problems. Anecdotally some people claim they run a square setup without any issue. I realize this does not provide the answer you are looking for, but I don't know that anyone can provide a more definitive answer. On a side note, a 275 tire is on the small side for a 10.5 width wheel, and a red flag goes up in my mind (I would want to do some more research on this fitment) insofar as this wheel's offset for the front. Good luck.

Yes, people do run a square setup, mainly for track and auto cross, not necessarily on a road driven car. I agree that the 275 tire width is small, I run a 305 on a 19x10.5 in the rear. The 10.5 up front is going to stick out like an inch, maybe 1.5 inch, not sure if you want that look, and you can fit a 295 width tire square setup if you want. Cheaper is not always better.

I run square wheels and tires on my '03 Z06 for both track and street without issue. A 275 fits on a 18x10.5 perfect. It doesnt have the bulging sidewall look of a tire too wide for the wheel.

Novel idea... Stay with the original design and maintain.

C5 Spec Corvette cars run 18x11 wheels w/ 54mm offset on all four corners with no issues. The official Spec Corvette tire is a 315mm width tire.

Yeah!! My dad (bless his soul) used to tell me "you can only go 55mph (oh, how the millenials would scream and holler about that 1970s-1990s speed limit!!), so why do you need all that power?" I told him maybe in first gear, but there are 3 more gears after that!!

Going on year 4 now. Granted, when I am on the street Im not doing anything crazy enough to initiate traction control or active handling, and when I am on track I turn everything off. Just regular driving I have not experienced any issues with the same size wheel and tire front to back. Now if you were dependent on active handling saving your life, I cannot comment on how different it may or may not be.

You'll probably have a little poke in the front, but nothing insane, and a 275 may be a little stretched looking on a 10.5" wheel for some, but I'm assuming you'll get to see them before buying them and you can determine if it works for you or not. If it's a killer deal, I don't see a reason not to go for it given the timing and necessity.
