Default C5z vs. c6z shifter questions

Hi everyone,
I just recently acquired a c6z shifter and it came with a lower box. I have a c5z and was wondering if I should change out the whole assembly or just leave the c5z lower box and just put the c6 shifter in instead?

You would need to change the whole assembly.

Thanks you for the response. I thought I read somewhere that both lower boxes were similar and that it was the actual shifter that are different. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't making more work for myslef thanks.

There are a number of videos on you tube showing that you can put the shifter directly into the c5 shifter box.

C6 upper drops right into the C5 lower. No need to change the C5 lower box. If your linkage rod bushings are all worn out and sloppy it's likely worth removing the 4 bolts and dropping the C6 lower with tighter bushings in. It takes 3 minutes.

The lowers are interchangeable. If you’re going to the trouble, and you have an extra box anyway, I recommend having TMOD go through it first. Then just change both at one time.

The TMOD job combined with the C6 handle is very popular and a wonderful smooth shifting setup.

C5-C6-C7 all use the same lower box
C6 & C7 upper shifters are functionally the same, but C7 have a much better dust boot and the steel finish appears a bit different.

Yes you can. I changed out my C5 Shifter for a C6 and it worked perfectly.

This is partially accurate….. the C5Z lower box has solid bushings just like the C6 Z shifter you purchased…… no reason to swap out the lower box unless it is worn out….. the non Z C5’s have rubber bushings and would be worth swapping. I did the same with my C5 Z06- kept the stock lower and just swapped in the C6 upper….. can confirm my C5 Z had solid bushings.

Great info thanks.yes I was reading similar Info about that too. I will probably go that route too and just put the shifter in my existing box because my car has only 40k miles and in still really great condition. Can't imagine the lower box being that worn. Thanks again everyone

Assuming it's an early c6z box, everything is solid.

I own a c5 z06 I bought a c6 z06 shifter and lower box ... only part it didn't come with is the shifter "rod" that connects to the linkage. All I was wondering is my c5z lower box the same As a lower c6 z06 box

again… depends on what year Z06 shifter you bought….. only differences in all the lower boxes that matters is solid vs rubber bushings….. early C6 Z06 and all C5 Z06 have solid bushings….. supposedly they could be “noisy” and so GM switched to rubber bushings across the board after 2009 I believe. Post a picture of your lower box and the holes that bolt it to the tunnel and we can probably tell you if it’s solid or rubber bushings
