Everyone should have a beater. The one you like but are not afraid to drive in the snow (if you live in Minnesota) or park near the cart corral at the grocery store.
I have had it for over a decade and call it the never ending project car. I have about 5k into it - including the cost of the car. Long live the beater!

Did someone say beaters? Lol. That's about all I drive, my Vette is by far my nicest car. We (wife and I) have an 05 Buick LeSabre, a 91 s10 4x4 (ugly, beat, runs good) a 89 f350 4x4 crew cab with a 12v swap, 08 super duty axles, steering and suspension, 5spd manual, and a gear vendors overdrive.... It's not really a beater, just sorta looks like one. So, when I drive the Vette, it really feels special.
I also have 2 mustangs, both in various stages of resto/disassembly. Lol.

Beater here! DD (not raining in AM) 1998 70mi RT. Cheap car, all stock low miles, everything is +++ and up to date. Much more efficient way to transport...just me to work. Don't have to chauffeur big groups at lunch. Have coyote and LS!! No sense in driving all that distance every week by myself if I was only hauling myself in the truck.

Change of plans, the old truck has no A/C and this is Phoenix, it's awful with no A/C here in summer.
The beater is now GF's old PT Cruiser, been sitting with a bad water pump, she got a new Kia Soul.
I'm putting on a water pump timing belt kit, includes idler and tensioner for timing belt, got off rock auto shipped to door for $110.00, Gates brand.
There were no name kits for $49.00 on Amazon, but read one review water pump went out pretty quick, the gates belt actually says made in USA!
Oh the battery is bad, Walmart has 50.00 batteries with one year warranty, going to get that, and need 4 new tires, again Walmart has Douglas tires for 44.00 each plus install and tax, I looked up Douglas Tires, apparently it's made by Goodyear just for Walmart.
The car is free, it has or had very good A/C last time it ran, has 162,000 miles.
The water pump and timing belt job may be horrible, very limited space to work.
By the way, C5 has a clutch fluid leak, not sure where, so having a 2nd car is a good idea.
Probably going to do full clutch job on C5 after summer is over, also find out what is leaking, also torque tube, everything.
Saturday the clutch fluid resivoir was empty, this is 2nd time after putting on Katech remote bleeder in January.

I guess that through the years,, the term "Beater" has morphed into something that I dont even recognize. ...Maybe its an east coast west coast thing. I dunno!! For you young'uns,,, a beater has to ...1...Have rust,, lots of rust....2.. dents,,, a lot of dents. 3,, Mismatched tires...at least half wore out...4.. leaks,,, at least one,,,,, two is better,,,,5,,, be at least 12 years old. If it dont fit this criteria, then theres no friggin' way that youre driving a "Beater"....
