Anyone out there have any thoughts on what type of cold air intake to go with..... Just got done installing a borla cat back system, now onto the air intake....any info would be appreciated
There are two types of air intake systems for the C5 Corvette, a few use outside (ambient air) and the majority of the CAI (sic) intakes use heated engine block air. the better know true CAI systems are VeraRam, Callaway, IceBox, those that open the front license plate area and a few others. All the other ones use engine bay air. The differences show up in the low torque rpm range--the use of ambient air will keep the air going to the MAF cooler, more dense, than heated air and will put more oxygen into each engine stroke. If you are driving in the middle of the summer and the outside air is 90 degrees your engine bay air might exceed 175 degrees.
This is duel K&N filters. This is the first thing I did to my car 21 years ago. All I read when these cars first came out was the air box was highly restricted. This was the only thing at the time that was available. Anything is better than stock.

After researching for a good 6 months, I decided to go with the Vararam with the power duct, not a simple install but well worth the effort and it runs/sounds/looks great.

If you go with a Vararam be aware that the increase in air flow may trip a code. If you are using a MAF that is unscreened, it might require going to a screened MAF to control the turbulence.

I installed the Vararam on my Z06 and did not receive any codes from the install.
I have the Calloway Honker on my '03 and couldn't be happier. Looks like it's factory and brings in true cold air (which in Florida, usually isn't saying much... ) Most people don't go with it because of cost. But, if you look at what the car and other things for it cost, it's a mere drop in the bucket.
All basic aftermarket intakes will function the same. I wouldn't even bother with a Vararam unless you are planning to modify further.
That's true. I read somewhere what the stock intake was capable of supporting and it was actually quite a bit, I don't remember the numbers but I was surprised. Mine had the Honker on it when I bought it or it probably wouldn't have it. I've done extremely minor mods. I don't track it and there's no way I can use the HP I have now let alone more.
I couldn't come to grips with spending big $$ for questionable power gain for my '02 coupe. So I just opened up the air box and drilled some fresh air holes in the radiator shroud. Also used some foam to partition off the air box from the hot engine bay. No codes or water problems.
Checked out a Vararam in person, wasn't at all impressed with the cheap construction given the MSRP. Went home and did the "zip tie" mod and haven't really thought about it since.
