Ahh, Toogood. Love their ports. Problem is I can't go tasting in the Z because I can't fit all my purchases in.

Also love Frivolo from Vino Noceto. Pour that into an ice cream maker and it freezes into a sweet wine slushy. Perfect drink for reading a book by the pool.

I had a 911 Targa and that car was a big disappointment to say the least - actually it was an extremely overpriced POS. Whenever it rained you could not see out the window in front of you - the slope of the glass and the wiper threw 3 thick streaks of water right across you field of vision and this could not be fixed by the dealer changing the blades twice and microscopically cleaning off the glass. Whenever it rained water dripped into the car on the driver's side right into the electric door lock at the front of the door and despite realigning the driver's window, replacing the weather stripping and adjusting the targa top, the dealer could not fix this either. !st gear and reverse were separated by a 1/4" throw up to the left and half the time when leaving a light or stop sign when you shifted into first, you went backward. You had to go into second gear position then jam in up into first, a real PIA. The car was black and the AC really sucked, it could never cool off the interior below 80 degrees and the steering wheel would get so hot you couldn't touch it. The car was extremely loud, every little bump in the road was a major noise and a blow to your butt and the road and engine noise was really uncomfortable. The car was more hype than anything else and when I got rid of it in exchange for a BMW, it was one of the happiest days of my life. Each if my 2 'vettes was/is such a better all around car in my mind there's no comparison.

Default Vette vs. Porsche

I thought about buying a Boxster before I purchased my last Corvette. It was competitively priced, low mileage and a beautiful blue with tan top and interior. After looking into the high maintenance, related rear engine complexities etc. that big ticket service call around the next corner seemed to kill it. I'll stick with my Vette. After almost 40 years of owning one, it's like a worn comfortable pair of shoes. I still get excited when the weatherman says tomorrow will be a sunny day!

A Vette can drag race as well as road race if you do it right.
To be fair though, a bone stock C5 doesn't excite me.
With a few bucks the C5 can be down right mean in every aspect.
I cant say that for the Porsche. Out of the box the Porsche has more finesse.
The Vette is more the Alpha male.

It'd be a boring world if we all liked only one same car.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, I just questioned a “car fanatic” that thinks a 911 is one of the ugliest cars ever made. I’m sure you are right about others thinking they are ugly but my guess would be that it would be a pretty small group that considers themselves “car fanatics” and agrees they are one of the ugliest cars ever made....

Maybe I’m wrong

I've noticed I tend to like the looks of the high end Porsches better than the base caymans and 911. The GT and R models with factory wings and more flashy paint liverys, maybe because the base models are rather subtle. But with the lastest C7s, I like the base models better than the wide body cars with ground effects etc.

I still sometimes think about the Cayman I passed on to get my C5. I went vette only because of the cost to keep it run was much lower. The Caymans I looked at were VERY nice.

VW bug is one of the ugliest cars ever made was my comment. I have only 2 friends who I would consider car fanatics.
One likes them less than I do, the other has an old air cooled 911 and a newer 911. So between the 3 of us I guess his 2 Porsches makes us 50/50. Haha

I'd trade both of my C5s for one of these:

607 HP 0-60 in 2.8 seconds
BUT, price starts at $190,000 and with options easily tops $200,000

Great car! I've been able to drive a few students 991 turbos on the track, the cool thing is how hard you can drive them in a 25 minutes session and how well they handle it.

Was looking at a little boxster before I bought my first C5. The car was PRECISE. It felt like I was wearing the car. But two things killed it: you have to remove the passenger seat just to change the fan belt, and the engine had a known oil starvation problem that was a $3500 fix. Cool little car, though.

The C5, by comparison, feels numb. Makes it much harder to drive at the limit.

One interesting thing is each car seems to attract a different type of woman. Older, more sophisticated women seem to like the boxster, younger women seem to prefer the vette.

Like many others here, I'm a "sports car guy" and not a "Corvette guy", in other words I love many different brand cars and buy cars that make the most sense for what I'm looking for.

That being said, I was dead set on buying a 996-era 911...the only reasonably priced used Porsches left out there.

But the more research I did, I realized a C5 Z06 would do everything better for the same money: styling, reliability, power, handling, "road presence" ie. stands out, cost of parts, ease of repairability, etc. etc.

So it was a no brainer. There are many brand loyalists/fanboys out there which drive up prices for specific cars. And many Porsches have fallen into that bucket, just like other cars (like the Supra, as the Terminator 03/04 Cobras are very comparable cars but don't have the overpriced hype in the used car market that Supras have).

I would have bought a Boxster S for a track car instead of the vette if the ones in my price range didn't have IMS. Handling in that car is much better even with my Z06 shocks and Z51 sways.

I can honestly say I’ve never looked at a Porsche and thought to myself “I’d like to have one of those”

Both very nice cars, but my choice would be the Vette. I just like the lines better and the V8 is addictive.

I miss my C5 at times but I don't think I'll ever sell my 997.

If your talking about the same vintage, C5 vs 996 your going to need a GT3 or turbo to stay with a stock c5z06 then mod dollar per mod dollar spent the z06 widens the gap. It's very expensive to mod Porsches.
