Personally, I think the C5 looks better with 1" larger wheels - it may be we are just used to all cars getting bigger wheels, but you should look at some pics of 18/19 combos before you decide what to do. And, BTW, mags are fairly rare, so they won't be cheap.
That green C5 convertible is mine, not long after putting the stock N73 magnesium wheels on. I wasn't crazy about the stock color, feeling it was too dark for my Fairway Green paint. I bought another pair of 18" mags, powder coated them a lighter color and ran all 18s for a while. The mags are quite light, and IMHO, the best looking GM wheels on a C5. I had no problems with cracking (even thin spokes crack) or other issues with them.
I've since gone with an 18/19 combo, but still have the mags, with a fresh coat of paint on them.

Here's a pic of the stock mags:

Later on, all 18" and different color:

And currently with 18/19 Forgestar CF5s:

Someone mentioned issues with the magnesium wheels. Is this a well-known problem, and what exactly happens? Cracking?
The only problem with the mag wheel's that I'm aware of is the mfg. could not make enough of them to supply the US market.
I did get them when my 98 was ordered when you couldn't get them but they have been stored in my shed for the last 10 years because I wanted to fit a larger tire so I went with Z06 size after market chrome thin spokes and never had a problem with them, they do weigh more then the factory thin spokes but then they are 1" wider and haven't cracked.

Let me know when you're getting ready to sell the car. I'll give you $200 plus my wagons for the thin-spokes :-P
