Need Help -- Mystery Aftermarket(?) Item on 2000 Dash
A friend of mine asked me what this is. She recently cleaned her dash and the light in the center came on. It occasionally flashes and there appears to be a related chirping noise. Sometimes the light turns red. She has had the car for 3 years and this is the first time this item has come alive. Does anyone know what it is. The two dark points on either side of the light are holes in the dash. She tells me she cannot find any product info in the glove compartment, etc..

Best educated guess would be some type of aftermarket alarm system. Does she have a non-OEM key fob?

GM Fob.
I am having an active conversation with the owner of this car and she just pointed out that there is a dial on the other side of the instrument pod that is obviously not stock either. She did not realize it before, but it is a dual action dial. THe top part affects the volume of the chirping. The bottom part shifts the light from green to red to off. The chirping continues when the lights are off.
Does this thing look familiar to anyone?

Pentavolvo, you are correct. I just scanned some web images of built-in radar detectors and found an old post on a 350Z forum that showed the same hardware. The poster described it as a K40 detector. It may have other functions. I have advised the owner of the car to contact K40 Electronics and see if there is a record of which model was installed in the car, obtain manual. etc.. Thanks to all for your help.
