Using Mobil 1, my stock '01 coupe A4 up to 72k miles seems to need at least a quart over the last 7000 miles, the DIC says 20% oil life yet but changing it soon.
Mostly highway, some spirited driving, no leaks, some soot on inner 2 tailpipes. Seems to run great....

Check your intake for oil. See how much has accumulated. The soot is just unburnt fuel. Check to see if you see any blue smoke on first start-up in the morning or when getting on it. My understanding is that even new engines will have some blow-by (oil that gets passed the rings) under high RPM acceleration (hence the catch can business model). A quart seems excessive. If you see a great deal of oil in the intake, clean it all out, and then check again in a month, if it is back in similar qualities, might be time for new rings.
If you see blue smoke on start up or under hard acceleration, could be other issues.

Melting Slicks
When I was running a stock LS1, whether slightly modded, H/C or blower, I changed oil around 4000 miles and never had to add any, and was still at the full mark.
Ive read about guys (especially manuals) having some oil usage, but mine never did.

mine doesn't ever require adding oil between changes but then again I don't go 7k miles between those changes either

No smoke on startup, if I gun it so it kicks down a gear to hit some 4-5 k rpm's can see some a little spit of smoke or fuel almost...but seems more black or grey.

My '03 does not use any oil between changes. My '00 used a quart every 1200 miles until I had GM replace the rings under warranty for excessive oil consumption. After that, it did not use any oil.

Neither my 98 or 02 needs any oil added between changes. My 98 is heavily modified and my 02 is near stock.

That may be more than most use but I would not be concerned. I think a quart in 7k is well within normal tolerances.
