What are you looking for - emergency road service or a service that offers maps, etc.?

Emergency road service primarily... Similar to AAA but better. I saw a service on TV and it was about 3 times the service for slightly less money. I just can't remember the name.

But none of them offer the coverage, the range, the services, and the availability when you 'really' need them, that AAA does.
You will get what you pay for.

I don't think there is anything better.

Everyone's going to boo me off the stage with anecdotal stories, but all the insurance companies and companies like AAA make money off what you're buying from them.
That means that on average, whatever you pay for a yearly subscription is more money than what you're likely to spend on just paying cash for a tow truck when you need it.
As long as you're a financially responsible person, I don't see a reason to pay a subscription for a service that is relatively inexpensive to just pay for out of pocket whenever you need it.

One thing about clubs like AAA is the legwork for getting qualified and trustworthy towing companies is done for you. And if you are traveling in a strange area, how would you know who to call so that you get a good price, a trustworthy company, and maybe some ham-fisted tow truck operator that could screw up your vehicle?
Sure, you might be able to save money by paying up front, but most travel clubs that have towing service also provide other things such as lockout service, flat tire help, jump starting, and even a travel agency that can plan an entire vacation for you.
How often you may need any of these services can play a part with costs, but I would much rather be in a position to simply make a phone call and get the help I might need. Especially at something like 3 in the morning out in the middle of nowhere.

The other nice thing about AAA is that it covers the subscriber, not the car. You can use AAA if you are a passenger in car that doesn't belong to you and something happens to that car.

great if you break down or get a flat less then 5 miles from your destination

My wife also has CAA (Canadian version) for peace of mind. it's less than $100/year and she feels better. Although I am still the first one she calls when she locks her keys in the car

Perhaps all us Vette owners should think about why a towing company would be willing to charge less than all the others in the area and what effect that might have on your towing service.
So, in this case, you get what AAA pays for!
Btw, I have roadside assistance through my insurance (Nationwide) and I think it's only $2/mo and I get up to either 100 or 200 miles towing free per incident - probably just 100 but I remember thinking it was a lot more than I expected!

That's what AAA advertises and wants you to believe. Last time I got a tow, the driver and I got onto this subject and basically AAA only uses whichever towing service is willing to charge the least. That's the only criteria for AAA doing "the legwork for getting qualified and trustworthy towing companies". He was talking about how they are the worst roadside service about trying to lowball and strong arm (words he used) towing companies.
