Big difference between the 2, I would drive both and see which you like better and then go from there. They both look and drive different, In the C5 for the price you like you should be able to get a nice lo mile 2001-2004.

I would be more than happy to answer all your questions, You can also go to Corvette Action Center for some great info, All C5's are a great car to own, The 2001-2004 has the most upgrades. If you are looking for an automatic you want one with the optional 3.15 rear gears, Much better performance with them over the standard 2.73 gears.

I am looking to get one too. z06 only. 2002-04.
Not trying to hijack your thread but I have a couple quick questions.
1. Is it true the 03 Z06's did not have the valve spring issue? A local selling an 03 says they were changed to a stiffer spring in 03 and 04.
2. I noticed most of the c5 z06's have the original clutch. Must be really good units to hold up for such a long time?

I purchased my 2004 c5 just around 3 months. I had a similar budget that you have, and looked at c4's, c5's and c6's. I didn't find a c6 in good shape with low miles close enough to that budget. But i did find a c5 coupe (not z06- I like the automatic transmission and the targa top) with 29k miles and was in great shape, just some very minor scratches that were barely noticeable. It is a blast to drive too!
I bet you can find a great car in that range. Good luck!

A successor to the ZR-1 made its debut in 2001 as the Z06, giving a nod to the high-performance Z06 version of the C2 Corvette of the 1960s. Instead of a heavy, double-overhead cam engine like in the ZR-1, the Z06 used a high-output, tuned version of the standard LS1 Corvette engine (designated LS6), which initially produced 385 hp (287 kW). Although its total horsepower output was less than that of the last ZR-1, the Z06 was much lighter, and could out-perform the ZR-1 in every category except top speed. It also cost substantially less money than the ZR-1.
Chevrolet engineered several modifications for the Z06 to best use the increased power. Starting with the most structurally rigid body style, the hardtop or FRC, new components included: uprated FE4 suspension, larger wheels and tires, revised gearing ratios, and functional brake cooling ducts. The Z06 is 38 pounds lighter than a standard C5 hardtop thanks to weight-saving measures such as a titanium exhaust, thinner glass, lighter wheel, non-EMT tires, reduced sound proofing, fixed rear radio aerial, and a lighter battery. Starting with the 2002 model year, the LS6 engine output was increased to 405 hp (302 kW) due to a larger CFM air intake, stiffer valve springs, lighter sodium filled valves and more aggressive camshaft lift and timing.

The LS1 engine initially produced 345 hp (257 kW), subsequently increased in 2001 to 350 hp (261 kW).
Edit: Just found this thread:

There is a WEALTH of knowledge on these forums. Just Read all the stickies at the top of the page. I am still learning too. Going from turbo FWD Mopars, to a RWD V8 GM sports car is a big difference. In a positive way.

Good luck with your search and purchase of a Vette. The C5 is a great car and with your budget, you should be able to get a low mileage late model one.

After researching the valve spring issue. Looks like it affected 02 Z's and early to mid 03 Z's. So the owner who told me that the issue was fixed for the 03 model year, was wrong. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-failures.html
That steering column lock problem isn't good to hear about either.

The c6, btw, started in 2005.
