A little information about your car will go a long way to getting help with problems. Just because they all look alike from 1997 to 2004 does NOT mean they are all exactly alike electrically, mechanically and for CERTAIN as the column lock recall fixes that were applied to the cars.
Things like year, manual or automatic, approximate miles and any mods is a good start. Putting it in your profile will help for the NEXT problem you run into.

If you go to the dealer for this problem, expect to spend $1000 or more to get the problem corrected with a fix that will be good until the problem happens again. GM does NOT and HAS NEVER HAD a PERMANENT fix for the column lock symptoms.
As suggested above order and install an LMC5 and unlocker. The ONLY permanent fix for the Column Lock Symptoms.: yesnod:
LMC5 is about $40 and unlocker a small amount additional plus shipping.
Here is a procedure that you can try to get the column unlocked. If it DOES unlock for you don't drive the car again until you have the LMC5 installed. You WILL get stranded again without it.

Many people have just had the lock mechanism bind and this is the way to release it (hopefully). HOWEVER, you must put in your key for this is work.
If this does not work as has happened with a few people then some "surgery" will be required if it is really bound up. We can do some more diagnostics before we go that far to see if it is something else causing the unlock to not work.
