Default K&N Replacement Filter

Anyone using the K&N replacement filter, I don't really want to change the original set up and was wondering if this replacement filter would give me any added performance. It just replaces the original filter in the original housing, washabe and reusable. Around 60.00 bucks. Thanks for your input :thumbs

I use the k&n drop in on all my vehicles if not a full intake. Short answer.. Yes, they breath better and will slightly increase performance, but the real purpose "for me" is the added fuel economy. I'd say it's worth it over the life of the vehicle. Not to mention reusable.
Now, there will be people who say how of doesn't filter as well as a paper filter. And that I agree with. However, the tiny microns that it does allow to pass are no danger to an engine. I wouldn't feel hesitant to use it at all.

I don't see the 60.00 worth any performance. The stock air box set up is crap, to the aftermarket Blackwing you could get for the car. Then you will see a diff plus the diff in cost.

I had a K&N filter on a motorcycle in the past: it didn't seem to flow as well and was a PITA to clean/re-oil.
There was one in mine when I bought the car. It was thicker than the standard paper element, to the point that it took three hands to get the housing latched up. I doubt the amount it was getting squeezed was doing it any good...it's history.

I have the K&N filter on my Callaway Honker as they replaced the original green filter a few years ago.

On topic, does anyone know where you can buy the K&N filter cleaning and recharge kit? I would prefer a retail pick up than an online order. Also, is the spray oil applicator as good as the squeeze bottle approach? Seems it would provide a more uniform application.

Thanks!

A used 2002-2004 Z06 airbox lid with a Delco paper filter will give you more performance for the same price or less and with no worries of over oiling the K&N filter. You can find the '02-'04 Z06 lids in the C5 "For Sale" section selling for around $50.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if these were available on retail shelves. Many of these stores list them online, however when you show up you find out they have to order them into the store.

K&N is fine for allowing more air. But they also allow more dirt.......no way around it.

If you want more air flow just remove the filter.

A little more. In no way is the K&N like running with no filter though.

More snake oil. just throw a clean paper filter in every 20K miles. And you won't have to mess with cleaning the K&N, then drying it, THEN making sure you don't get too much OIL on it so it doesn't gum up your MAF.

wouldn't bother unless you also use the 2002+ z06 lid. the z06 lid and k&n would be worth gains without a doubt. also cheaper than a blackwing and safer in downpours

Quick question on the cleaning of the filters. If you pull out the filter and it's still relatively clean, red, etc., do you need to reoil it or can you simply (gently) hose out any debris and let it dry?

The instructions that they outline on their home page show some really dirtly filters. Since mine is a weekend driver with less than 3K miles on in it since it was originally installed with my Callaway Honker CAI, is reapplying the oil necessary? Will the oil be removed with the dirt when I hose out any debris? My filter is still red and doesn't even look dirty.

Cleaning procedures...

Do people really struggle that much with oiling the filter? Some posters on here act as if it's akin to figuring out the meaning of life.....

I don't struggle with it, it just seems like overkill if the filter isn't that dirty. I guess even a little water would remove the oil, so in answering my own question, I would need to re-oil it if I run water through it.

The K&N website indicates under normal use the filter doesn't have to be cleaned until about 50K miles. That seems excessive as I think we're all in the habit of changing or cleaning the filters with every oil change.

I wasn't referring to you; sorry if that's the way it came across. Others make it out to be such a process.

It is probably overkill given how much you drive it, but I'd go ahead and just wash/dry/re-oil it regardless of how clean or dirty it appears to be. Since it's a weekend ride, you can do it during the week and it'll be ready to oil and drop back in by the time you drive her next.

Not that it's a struggle but a PIA and waste of time that's not worth the trouble for maybe an extra 1-2 HP. I have a Blackwing and the next time it needs to be cleaned I will replace it with an '02 Z06 lid and Delco paper filter. If you want more power, either H&C or FI with LT's & tune.

not at all

cotton gauze should go at least 20k miles before a clean and re oil is needed, that is, unless you live in a dusty environment

waste of product doing it with every oil change

Living in Fl, I don't live in a dusty environment, however since the Honker basically acts like a larger than stock vacuum cleaner, I do tend to pull up a lot of sand when I enjoy my evening beachside drives.

When I checked the filter today, it didn't look dirty, however I did shake some sand out of it, but the sand was mostly built up around the edges. By removing the filter, I was also able to go in and clean out the lower section of the radiator. The Elite Engineering radiator screen I installed a few years ago really helps. Before I installed it, I used to clean out large leaves, styrofoam cups, candy wrappers, etc. Now it stays pretty clean.

Since I only have 3.5K miles on the filter, I decided it looks good at least until my next oil change (next year).

oh for sure, the honker or vararam is going to get a LOT more crud than the oem setup

my comment was just about a k&n in the oem box with an oem lid
