Default Got stopped by LEO with a radar detector on?

So, in the midst of getting pulled over, do you attempt to dismantle and hide your detector setup before the stop? For me, I'll try as soon as I see the lights come on and before coming to the complete stop. I have my Escort windshield suction mounted low enough to be able to reach in front and grab the detector right away and hide it.

Tell us your stories if you've been in the same scenario. What have you done?

Nope, its not illegal so why bother. In my experiance if you ask the average LEO they don't care either way. They care about what you are doing on the road not if you have a detector or not.

Your attitude and level of respect during the interaction will mean more than what you have stuck to your windshield.

Why he or she probably already saw it! They are getting less useful. POP and instant on renders them worthless it only helps for the lazy LEO's.

I agree. I got stopped 2 times by GA highway patrol before my vette days had a 350z. Both I was nice and got a warning even after he saw I had one two days ago. Said I won't be able to get another warning. It's all about attitude 90% of the time. If you ever drive thru Warwick ga they will give their own mom kid or you know what buddy a ticket. Worse police dept ever and I have the utmost respect for police being retired military. But they are just you know what. All 4 of them.

Have never owned one. If you can't do the fine, don't do the crime. Be a man, act with genuine respect, and take responsibility for your actions.

Having a few friends in law enforcement I've asked the question before. One of my friends told me just because you are/were speeding doesn't guarantee he would write a ticket, he may give a warning. However he said if he comes up to a car and sees a radar detector then it's a ticket for sure, just because he knows that you have it so you can try to speed without getting caught.

I've had them before and I'd always take them down or they are up in the top corner and I'd flip up my sun visor to cover it.

Don't use it in the Vette, but do in my DD. And I leave it if pulled over.

Having the detector out in the open will pretty much guarantee you a ticket. One porkchop once told me "I see you're playing the game" I replied "its self defense" he went on to say that I lost this time. Funny thing is although I had to pay the lawyer I didn't have to pay the ticket. So I consider it a win.

Even in the day of instant on radar it doesn't render them useless. If they're clocking cars down the road ahead of me my valentine gives me warning and plenty of time to slow down. It is worthless if you're the only car running up on a porkchop who targets you. The detector is a tool and not a guarantee you won't get caught.

Never owned one. Have two friends who do own them. Both of them had the pleasure of knowing when they were getting thier speeding tickets as the detectors alerted them that they had been caught. When I rode with them all I got from the detector was annoying beeping for nothing everywhere they drove.

When you drive into the Commonwealth of Virginia you see the sign posted that says RADAR DETECTORS ILLEGAL and they mean it. They don't sieze them any more that I know of but there was a time when they did. You could pick it up when you went to see the Judge to pay your fine.

I don't know what they do when a vehicle is factory equipped with a radar detector. Perhaps that is when they stopped confiscating them. Car won't fit in the evidence bag.

Correct. They are illegal in Virginia.....doesn't have to be on/off....only accessible to the driver. The officer can seize it for evidence and hold it till after any appeals are exhausted. After that you can pick it up from their property room or have it mailed at your expense. Most radar operators will know you have the detector when your speed suddenly drops. The officers I know only seize them when you try to hide it....or act like an A..H. It's not a big-time fine or a moving violation. To the other gent who paid a lawyer.....you sure you won? Officer is paid for his time in court and I think the fine is less than what a lawyer costs. Around here no lawyer is coming to court for less than $500.

My bad. Klassen/Klaussen (sp) used to offer modified Mercedes Benz sedans with radar detector installed as part of their modification, along with lowering the car and increasing engine performance. Not factory install. Kind of like a Motion Performance deal.
