Default Don't want to be overpriced!

I just called an auto shop asking for $500 for replacing my right rear barren and then I told him that timkens barrens are only about $150? He'll give me a call back so anyone have a good estimate of what I could get it down to?

The BEARING is just part of the cost. Did they give you a breakdown of labor time and rates? If it were my shop, I wouldn't come down at all if I quoted my correct rates and the correct time to change it. If they didn't quote correct time, I would find a shop that did. You seldom come out ahead when you tell someone their work isn't worth what their charges are. If the shop didn't have overhead for employees, rent, insurance, and a hundred other things, I'm sure it would be cheaper. Basically, if you can't do it yourself, you have to pay someone who can.

assuming he marks up the bearing 50% or more - - and charges $90/hr for labor? . . .3 hours plus the part?

I don't know where you are located, but if it's a quality shop in a big city . . . Not too bad IMO . .

Good luck-

I never did get why the shop makes more on the part than the parts store does. I can see adding the delivery fee and a modest addition to cover any comebacks but some outfits double the price on parts.

When I worked for Firestone in the late 90s we were told to charge cost of part times 2.5. That was just too much mark up in my opinion, but I wasn't the owner.

200-250% is standard in automotive

as much as it sounds like a lot you burn through money running a shop.

people seem to complain about shops and stealerships all the time on here.

but

you guys also make 60-150k a year at your job, if you run a shop or dealership that IS your money. and, honestly, if it was such a rip, why don't you do it yourself?

I do, about the only thing I go into a shop for is tires.

And to the OP, I think you don't want to be OVERCHARGED, not OVERPRICED.

I do run my own shop and don't charge that much. Maybe it's the fairness in me.

Because IF that part goes bad they have to replace it for free if under warrantee. My buddy used to use NAPA parts but because of a lot of come backs he has switched to O'Reilys. If they do have a bad part they replace it without much hassle.

there's nothing fair in profit. if you don't charge it i would guess it's because your area doesn't support it.

businesses by nature are designed to separate people from their money

repeat business is based a lot more on customer experience than it is price. nordstrom is able to sell you a t shirt for $100 and do it over and over simply because they A have outstanding customer service and B make the customer believe their quality and brand is exceptional

the same can be done for virtually any business

allows a guy to work less and make more

that's not to say everyone goes for this. i price shop like mad for car parts, but, i also don't need service. if i owned a shop i wouldn't want guys like me calling, i would want the rich little old ladies....which...is exactly where my current business caters, upper middle class, crunched for time, need a job done, don't care what it costs. typically the two demographics i've found i don't want are A. price shoppers and B. the ultra wealthy. that second group expects a lot and doesn't want to pay for it

My father owned a small neighborhood hardware store in the days before Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. I remember him saying that perception of a fair price really boiled down to which side of the counter you were standing on!

I would have charged you at least twice that much, just because of your poor attitude and spelling.

Bearing R&R is a laborious, time consuming job...UNLESS you have invested thousands in specialized tools, four post lift, etc. Welcome to the land of "Corvette Tax".

3hrs labor @ $90.00 = $270.00 ( I think the book said 2.5 hrs)
Part at cost, no markup = $150
Total $420.00
He's only $80.'s more, I wouldn't squeeze him for less, it's not an easy job and you may need him down the road. Don't burn bridges.

I have no idea how much labor and part would cost because I am not sure what a barren is or located.

GM sells modular pre-built "barren lol" assemblies with the speed sensor all properly shimmed and lubed.

Front GM part 88967287 ~250
Rear GM part 88967288 ~150

There might be a left right difference, I really don't know but point is do people really rebuild hubs instead of just buying a complete bolt-in replacement?
