Default C5 Grand Sport Project

This will be the epic thread documenting my C5 Grand Sport project. While I have referenced this project in a number of other threads, I have never taken the time to lay it all out. So here goes...

First, I will share a short presentation I created in Powerpoint to explain the genesis of this project and how I am modifying my car to bring the C5 Grand Sport to life. I have converted each slide (there are 12) in the presentation to a jpeg file so that I can upload them here. I apologize in advance that it may be a little difficult to read them. I will include the text separately to help. The first two posts in this thread (after this one) will include those slides as I think I can only upload six per post.

A couple of notes about the slides. You will see a picture of the car as it will look when the mods that are visible from the exterior are done. This was done via photoshop just to give an idea of how it will look. Real pics of the final appearance will be posted when it is done. Also, on the last slide you will see some mods in black font and some mods in blue font. The black represents mods already completed over the past couple of years. The blue represents mods to be done this year to finish the project.

Second, as I get the chance I will post up pictures detailing the mods already done.

Finally, I will post up pictures of the mods yet to do as I get them done.

As I have stated in the past, my recommendation to anyone who wants to mod their car to any significant degree is to come up with a theme and then mod accordingly. I think this approach creates a car that, when done, is much more than just a sum of its parts.

As you can probably see, my theme is the C5 Grand Sport that GM never built. It is supposed to represent what GM could have/would have built if they had pursued this model based upon the C5. Thus, I have attempted to keep all mods within the theme of what GM would have built, essentially slotting the model between the base car and the Z-06, much like GM did with the C6 generation.

Anyway...sorry for the long winded explanation and the ton of pics (I told you it would be epic).

I hope you enjoy...

THE GRAND SPORT LEGEND
IN EARLY 1962, CORVETTE CHIEF ENGINEER ZORA ARKUS DUNTOV BEGAN TOP SECRET WORK ON A CORVETTE PURPOSE-BUILT RACE CAR TO WIN SEBRING AND LE MANS AND FINALLY BEAT SHELBY AND HIS COBRAS…
FIVE CARS WERE BUILT AND RACED FROM 1963-67, BUT THE PLUG WAS PULLED ON THE PROGRAM ONCE THE GM BOARD LEARNED OF IT AND NO OTHER GRAND SPORTS WERE BUILT UNTIL 30 YEARS LATER.
ALL FIVE ORIGINAL CARS STILL EXIST AND ARE SHOWN HERE IN A RARE APPEARANCE TOGETHER AT THE 2003 AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS D’ELAGANCE.
THESE CARS ARE ESTIMATED TO BE WORTH WELL OVER $5 MILLION EACH.

THE GRAND SPORT ICON
THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE SYMBOL OF GRAND SPORT CORVETTES ARE THE HASH MARKS ON THE left FENDER //, BUT THAT ISN’T WHERE THEY STARTED…AND, DESPITE THEIR ICONIC STATURE TODAY, THEIR REASON FOR BEING WAS ACTUALLY QUITE MUNDANE…
BACK IN 1963, THE MECOM RACING TEAM FIELDED 3 OF THE ORGINAL GRAND SPORTS AT NASSUA - ALL OF WHICH SPORTED THE SAME PAINT SCHEME. SO, IN ORDER TO TELL ONE CAR FROM THE OTHER AS THEY APPROACHED COMING DOWN THE PIT LANE, THE COLOR CODED HASH MARKS (BLACK, WHITE AND RED) WERE PLACED ON THE FRONT OF THE CARS (NOT THE FENDERS).
IRONICALLY, THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THEse marks WERE EVER USED ON THE ORIGINAL GRAND SPORTS…

THE GRAND SPORT REBORN
GM REVIVED THE GRAND SPORT LEGACY IN 1996 AS A SPECIAL WAY TO COMMEMORATE THE END OF THE C4 RUN. ONLY 1,000 OF THESE SPECIAL CORVETTES WERE EVER BUILT:
810 COUPES
190 CONVERTIBLES
RPO Z16 (GRAND SPORT PACKAGE) CONSISTED OF MANY SPECIAL ITEMS, INCLUDING:
ADMIRAL BLUE PAINT w/WHITE STRIPE
RED HASH MARKS ON LEFT FENDER
LT4 ENGINE (330HP)
MN6 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
ZR-1 STYLE WHEELS, PAINTED BLACK
230 WERE BUILT WITH A SPECIAL RED/BLACK INTERIOR, THE REST WERE ALL BLACK.

THE GRAND SPORT LIVES ON
The “GRAND SPORT” legacy continued a number of years later when the legendary moniker RETURNED ON THE 2010-2013 MODEL C6’S AS RPO Z15 (GRAND SPORT HERITAGE PACKAGE).
ONCE AGAIN, IT CONSISTED OF MANY SPECIAL ITEMS, INCLUDING:
Z06 STYLE WIDE FENDERS
Z06 SIZE WHEELS (UNIQUE DESIGN)
Z06 SIZE BRAKES
SPECIFIC BADGING AND INTERIOR
AS BEFORE, IT WAS AVAILABLE IN BOTH COUPE AND CONVERTIBLE FORM, BUT THIS TIME THE GRAND SPORT COULD BE HAD IN ANY COLOR.
IT WAS, ESSENTIALLY, A Z06 CORVETTE WITHOUT THE LS7 ENGINE AND ALUMINUM FRAME.

THE MISSING GRAND SPORT
But what about the generation in-between?
While THE C5 (1997-2004) CAME IN SEVERAL body styles…
COUPE w/TARGA TOP (1997-2004)
CONVERTIBLE (1998-2004)
FIXED ROOF COUPE (1999-2004)
…And A NUMBER OF SPECIAL editions WERE BUILT, INCLUDING…
INDY PACE CAR (1998)
Z06 FRC (2001-4)
50TH ANNIVERSARY (2003)
COMMEMORATIVE EDITION (2004)
…AND DESPITE AN INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL C5-R RACING PROGRAM…
GM NEVER MADE A C5 GRAND SPORT CORVETTE.
SO I DID!

Why not go with the C6 GS wheels instead of the C5 Z06 wheels?

No question the C6 GS wheels are awesome and they look great on a C5 (really love the chrome wheels on your blue car ).

The reason I kept with the C5 Z-06 wheels is that I am building my car as an interpretation of what GM would have built had they actually made a C5 Grand Sport back when C5's were in production. It's possible that GM would have used a wheel different than the then-current Z-06 wheel (like they did on C6's), but no way to know for sure, so I went with the C5 Z-06 wheel as I think it represents a very likely upgrade that would have been done on a GS model.

You will note that there are places where I made exceptions to this approach (like the C6 Z-06 shocks and Z-51 sway bars) but these exceptions are in areas generally not visible, so I don't think they take away from the C5 Grand Sport theme.

There is a member who did both a C5 and C7 Grand Sport...me personally If I were doing a Grand Sport I would paint it Admiral Blue with a white stripe and have black wheels but a full red interior(black carpets) with the sebring silver is nice too.

IMHO the Z16 LeMans Commemorative IS the missing GS for C5.

That's the route I'm going. My car already has the GS stripes (drivers only, aka 1996 GS) and C5 Z06 wheels. I purchased it that way and thought it had a bit of a personality crisis; C5 coupe with Z06 wheels and GS stripes.

Going the full GS with a nod to the 2010 C6 GS.

If I was wiling to paint my car (I'm not) I'd go Atomic Orange to seal the deal.

I never thought of the C5 CE that way, but I can see your point. The AE and CE are two of my favorite factory C5's.
