Default stupid question

I have a 2000 coupe with pop-up lights. I was driving down the Autobahn the other night and I noticed that I cannot get the speed over 120mph with the lights on. but during the day I can get her up to 150-160MPH.

Is there a safety switch installed where the car wont go over 120mph with the lights on?

Damn, this brought back memories of Hohenfels. Mostly mud or dust.

Must be your headlight covers acting like a sail!

The headlights in the up position do, in fact offer quite a bit of wind resistance. Notice, the C-5Rs have non pop ups, that's for a reason, just like C-5Rs were not FRCs.

No question is a stupid question. That being said, not too many on this side of the pond would be able to answer your question because of our ridiculously low speed limits. We can only dream of having the same problem. However, from personal experience in an older car, I know that having windows down at high speed makes a big difference in top speed so maybe the pop-ups have a similar impact.

Hold your hand out the window at that speed and I bet you'll be able to guess what the issue is.

Yeah, but 30-40MPH difference? I'm not buying it.

Headlights up doesn't increase the frontal area, it just adds some turbulence above the front wheel wells, in an area where the airflow just isn't all that smooth to begin with. The fixed "frog-eye" headlights on the C5R aren't much better.

I agree. With a 180 MPH top speed in 5th gear, it's highly unlikely that the headlights would reduce top end by 60 MPH.

Of course, it kinda makes sense that even with high beams on, doing more then 120 MPH would surely outrun the lighting distance, safetywise-speaking. Perhaps all C5s in Germany require programming to limit higher speeds at night?

Doubt it's the headlights...
We did 150+ for several miles, and cruised at ~130 for awhile, on remote roads in NV during a cross country trip, with the roads signed for headlights on, night or day.

Ours were on/up, and our '02 Vert didn't flinch.

What happens when you turn the pop up lights in the day? It's not your headlights trust me on that get that silly idea out of your head. As far as why you are having issues that's a odd one.

Maybe your right foot doesn't flex as far with your butt muscles puckered up driving that fast in the dark.

I've gone 176mph with the lights up so I'm not sure what your car is doing...

Even with the lights up I seriously doubt that your car would lose that much top end speed. And no, there is not a safety switch installed on the car. Might want to get it checked by a good mechanic to see what is going on.
