Have You Had A Steering Position Sensor Fail?
I'm just curious how common it is for the steering wheel position sensor to fail. Shortly after I got my 2004 Z06 several years ago with +/- 50K on the clock I had to replace the SWPS. Two weeks ago I got the Service Active Handling warning & sure enough, got the 1287 & 1288 DTC. I bought an extra SWPS when the first one failed, so I unplugged the one on the steering column and plugged the new part in and the warning went away. Switched it back & the warning came back. So the SWPS only lasted 10K miles. That seems like a load of nonsense to me. So now I've had an EBCM fail and two SWPS failures. How many miles did you get before your SWPS failed? I love the car, but come on!!!

Mine went out at 55,000. Have gotten a warning 2 or 3 times on cold mornings, but no real problems so far after 7000 miles.
Dealer installation was in the $400+ range 2 years ago.

The sensor on my 04 coupe went out this year with about 50,000 mile on the car.

Looks like I may have just been unlucky with my replacement part going bad so quickly. I put the new part in yesterday and it's fine now, it's just the aggravation of having to pull the steering column and the lost time.

I am getting the codes now on 99 vette, just turned 53,000 two weeks ago. Hard to find sensor for 99 but dealer told me that GM is having someone make this part again and will be available in 4 to 6 weeks. I hope so.

Had my '00 for 7.5 years and 37K miles and no SWPS issues at all. Have 19K on my '03 and no problems either.

Mine failed around 30k miles. I put on about 35k since replacing it and it's still working. Here's a thread I made with tips on how to replace it:

Ah geez! Is this something else I need to worry about? Does anyone actually have any stats regarding this issue? Is the failure as common and imminent as the EBCM or column lock?

Mine went after 42k miles on my 2004. I spent $87 for parts and $180 for labor to replace it

At 52,000 miles, no problems in that area but every 2-3 years (10-15K miles) have to replace the smog pump check valve that is behind the intake manifold.

It's unsettling to be driving down the highway at 70mph and your active handling decides to pull you to the left without warning.
Hopefully the fella that posted earlier about the old steering wheel position sensor got good info from his dealership.. Would be great for the Vette owners that have the earlier year C5's.
