Yep, '73 was the first year for the big KZs. They started out as 900s then though and were called "Z1s", '77 was the first year for the 1000's. Pretty collectible these days. If his was a '73, it probably looked like this:

Some would say the 1969 Honda CB750.

I owned one from 1972 to 1980.

750 Fours were HUGELY popular during their day and are fairly sought after these days as well, but the Z1 was the fastest production bike made when it came out. They called them "King Kaw" and for good reason. A lot of neat history on them if you study up on them. The Honda's were marketed much more as a cruiser style bike than a performance bike. Check this article out for some good info on the differences between the two:

Don't feel to bad...I had to give mine up too. Health reasons. But, I traded for my C5 and I actually am enjoying the vette more. It haunts me to take it out and drive! I'm really enjoying it. Bike was great but I just didn't ride it enough anymore. It was a 2006 Heritage Classic with only 5,500 miles on it. I"ll miss her but my new baby is keeping me happy!

I had a 65 XLCH for 33 years. That bike put me thru hell and back just starting it. Wrecked my right knee when the kicker fell thru once and broke my right ankle when it kicked back. Then again it probably saved my life by not starting several times when we were out on the town till morning...........

I rode was a brand new '63, and I was legal hahahaha If this one has been started in less than a week, and I do my part! she will fire on the second kick. After having set up spot on the only mod is a mikuni carb with a dedicated low speed circuit instead of trying to use a reg butterfly choke system. As this is a mag bike, retard 10/15 degrees and kick her like you mean it!

Since we are cruising down memory lane, here was my ride for about 10 years. I let her slip away in the late nineties and have missed her since.

My 03 Heritage

My 08 Heritage. I've been riding since I was 15. In 1982 I rode across the country on a 81 650 Yamaha. Ah, to be young again!

When we were kids we would buy big single baskets for near nothing and get em running and sell em. At that time they were just loosing their place as "the bike" for the SO CAL desert.

This one is way fun to ride, if Ya think the '62 Sportster gets looks, many new bike folks don't even have a clew what this is hahahah
