Default is the corvette a rich mans car?

....? I get the feeling from people I meet that because you own a corvette you must have money. I never considered a corvette a status symbol just a fun sports car.

Anything that is impractical for daily use, by most peoples standards, is considered a toy. In addition, the Corvette has always had the status of a money car because of the demographics that dominate ownership...over 50, over 100k/yr (roughly speaking). So, the association was long made that Corvette = a lot of excess cash to play with....and if you were younger than typical it really raises questions.

It's a good and a bad thing. I'm young by Corvette demographical standards....35 (look 28-29 most people say)...so I catch that a lot. I actually got pulled over by this idiot police officer last year and he started questioning "how I afforded such a car", as if implying I was involved in something illegal.

You'll have that happen. In my opinion, enjoy it....the Corvette perception is what keeps a lot of the trash out...if you know what I mean.

No, but you better have deep pockets or be able to turn a wrench.

Just take a look at some of these homes in the backgrounds of our corvette pictures. Looks like most are not doing to well. My guess is the majority of c5 owners are making 80k plus.

I wouldn't think so, most people can go buy a C5 for from anywhere from 8k - 20k plus. That puts these cars right in the price range of brand new Sentras, Camrys and Ford Fusions. Do those sound like money cars to you? I mean 8 grand gets you a high mileage Vette but a decently kept 4wd pick up with high mileage from the same time frame goes for roughly the same. The only people that think a C5 is a money car or either misinformed or just plain ignorant.

Non Vette people think C5 Corvettes cost a lot more than they do. When I bought my '01 a couple months ago a friend asked me how much over 30 grand did I pay for it. He was shocked when I told him $16K

Same here....guys at work were saying "that must be a hefty payment" when I got my 02 z06 a couple months ago. Shocked to hear I did the "easy payment plan"..... one easy payment!

So then they say "must be nice to spend $30k on a car "

Agree with others. ...misinformed! Those are the guys i will call when I want to sell ot

I get the "how can you afford a corvette" comments a lot because I'm still young. (22)
The majority of people see the car and think that it costs a lot more than it actually did. I personally had this mentality until I started looking at them and realized that they cost a lot less than I first thought.

Having been building cars for a long time though, I must say, the Corvette isn't that cheap to mod. It's not terribly expensive to get in the door, but it's in the middle of the spectrum to mod. It's not a Porsche, but it's not a 3 series BMW either. Clutches are pricey, tires are very, headers are steep (non chinese ones anyway), etc. Also, labor to do a lot of mods is pricey due to complexity of drivetrain versus a traditional setup.

The biggest thing Corvettes have going for them is they are pretty high production cars with a core engine architecture shared by the entire GM lineup, making repair parts affordable.

22? Your insurance for the Vette must cost a fortune. When I was 22 back in the 70s I was going to buy a 66 Mercury Cyclone 390 GT, but could not when I found out how much the insurance was going to be.

A lot of folks who have never had one don't realize: what you can get in one of these for, the great performance they provide, their durability, and most especially the fuel efficiency of them.

No, people assume you have more money than brains, which is not exactly the same thing. In my case, I make that much money by the second week of February each year...

The sticker price on mine was $54,000 and I paid $16,000. It still runs and drives like new, does get over 26 mpg and goes like a bat out of hell. It is one heck of a bargain.
