In this country you pay NZ$35-40,000 for a very tidy 2000/2001 Corvette so thats a bit of coin for what will 99% be used as a toy, not a daily driver.

Thats $28-32k American!

Job? I sell Real Estate

Have been into cars since I had a 1967 GT390 fastback Mustang as a teenager...Had a Camaro and another Vette in between as well as Australian V8's

Put myself thru school to get a degree in Mech. Engineering got a job in a machine shop at 18 to help. Did it for 35 yrs. retired 5 months ago Bought 40 acre's In El Dorado County now getting real bored may go look for a part time job or set-up a small shop for odds & ends to keep busy. Of those 35 yrs. I owned my own shop 16 yrs. got out before the fall of Manufactureing in the good ole U.S.A. Now we import crap from China to put on our cars. (small rant) God Bless our founding Fathers they had plan.

US export documentation / clearance, packing, shipping, insurance, NZ customs clearance, 15% GST (tax on purchase price in $NZD) Duty, NZ container movement, fumigation, devanning, MAF inspection and cleaning.
Then pay to have it complied

so that easily swallows up additional 10k above US purchase price

If I was to go for a drive tomorrow I wouldnt see a C5 Vette anywhere...occasionally I see one, but not to often...

Not bread and butter here...its a real treat

I'm a professional engineer with a degree in mechanical engineering. I specialize in welding metallurgy R&D and the construction of Nuclear pressure vessels. I also specialize in designing automation equipment to construct those vessels.

Growing up I went into engineering because of the Corvette. I always wanted to be an automotive engineer so I could design and build cars. Unfortunately the industry is lacking in Ontario compared to what it was years ago. Now instead of building something fun I build things that people need.

I have a BS in Manufacturing Engineering. My first job after graduating was for Nissin Brake. At 5 years, I worked my way up to senior staff engineer. I jumped ship after 7 years and got a job at an integrator owned by Lincoln electric as a mechanical engineer. Now I design fixtures, tooling, guarding… really anything. Based on our trending economy, I only have about 40 years till retirement, I’ll be 70 then.

I started t as a computer engineer back when they still used relays for switching. In 1987 I left that to get into financial planning and sales. (I hated it) I retired in 2000 at age 55. I now golf, play poker and help a friend deconstruct Corvettes for recycling of parts.

Life is not just good, it's great.

Retired engineer after 30 years. Now I'm a teacher assistant at an elementary school.

Congratz on your retirement, bj1k!

E-T, I was wondering how you were going to downplay your career!
