Default t-stat change out

I'm getting ready to change out t-stat for an over heating problem. Any tips or recommended procedure I should follow for this job? My car is on slight incline nose up. How much fluid would I loose? Should I drain radiator and where? I don't want to make a big mess. How much should I drain if any. Any do's and don'ts I should be a where of? torque ratings? I have a housing gasket and new stat. Thanks

That year is your Vette? The t-stat design changed after a few years. If it is an early model I suggest you get the later model t-stat housing and stat. I forget what year the change went into effect.

Depends how long you have been running the coolant for would vary whether it needs to be completely flushed out or not.

According to the Op's ("about me") statistics, it states he has an 02.
I believe the stat change was in 04.

you need these two parts

Ac delco water pump 251-744 $177.61
Ac delco water pump inlet w/ stat 15-11057 $29.30

you can not use part 15-11057 on an old pump

Looks like prep is everything. I don't have an extra housing. Back to the store I guess or try this as fast as possible with help. I'll give it a try in the morning. I was thinking letting the housing and hose stay together. Any thoughts on that?

Today got away, helping daughter move.

Ken, if you indeed have a 2001 LS motor the stat is integrated into the housing ( as a unit)

That is the style stat they used from 97-03.

From 04 on up, the stat is removable from the housing.

Example.... in this picture.

97-03 housing stat (On the left) part #609-067

04 on up is the stat (On the right) part # 619-257

Wow.... Thanks again for all the posts/reply. Now I'm confused. I have 2002 bone stock motor. I've been experiencing sudden over heating in the last week. I'm pretty much convinced it's the stat, as it will climb in temp, but will settle back down in the short trip to/work. I checked out the fans last week (OK) and this was short week for me.

I drive short congested (stop/go) traffic (2/3 miles) and then open hwy (60 mph) about 10 miles and then congested again (2/3). My car (not always) will get 260 in the short run. On hwy comes back down, and then stay cool (or not) in the congested leg, again.

Other things have got in the way, so I haven't done the job yet. I picked up a stat and housing gasket (o ring) and was going to try ET method today. I got stat from local parts place (not GM dealer) but looks very similar to pics in the post above. Mine was only $14. So I hope I got the right one. Advanced auto's data base say it is on both parts. I was going to go out and do this today. With my luck the hottest part of the day. What about burping? Always needed here?

Thanks for all the posts.... I copied the ET procedure as well, and will keep it on file. I do that a lot (copy posts) so I can study or pass on, without doing searches all over again. If anyone has another procedure or tips, post away. Thanks..........

Bumblez,.......... So you are saying that the stat and housing are all one part/assembly? I just re-read everything. Oh poo.... Can anyone else verify this. I don't want to make a mess out of this today. I have just a stat.

Good luck.

As for the info; why not simply have a Maintenance bookmark section and bookmark things to save? Why take up space on your system when the posts will be available on the site servers? To each their own I guess.

Yes, that is what I said.

Yes, the thermostat & housing are one unit.

Yes you can still use the change out procedure that Evil Twin suggests.

No, you will not buy the stat you need for $14.

Why not have both style stats on hand , when ready to do your change out?

If you bought your car used, some one prior could have changed out your water pump to the newer style 04 & up..... requiring the use of just the $14. stat.

Need more help. I called chevy parts dealer today. They say if my water pump housing has casting numbers of 12562459, then I have original pump. My casting numbers are 12345678. I could not see or read any other numbers. Any help on this casting number on which stat/inlet+stat I should be gettting? Thanks again for everyones help on this.

I have a '98. The early models have the stat built in the housing. ($$$) The later models the housing and the stat are separate. ($) When I changed out the stat to a 160 degree one I bought the later model - cheaper! There was no need to change out the water pump. I did this about 3 or 4 years ago when I got a tune.

I'd start by cleaning your radiator from underneath. You'll be amazed what you'll wash out of there. Check the air dam while you're under there. Then try the stat. I swap mine with very little fluid loss

Because more than once I have clicked on an old link and the pics or links are no longer available. I always copy and paste into work or create a pdf to save on my pc.
