100 octane
Quick question....a friend said he filled his '03 with 100 octane at a Shell station while not paying attention. Said he was getting a cel.
Any major problem to come of that?
No, it wasn't me...

if it was e85 then yes, that's a major problem. in order to run e85 the amount of fuel needed is substantially higher. without a fuel map and injector capacity to handle it you risk engine damage.
tank needs to be drained and re filled with normal gas
you can pull a line on the fuel filter, stick it in a jug and cycle the key to pump the gas out

depends on what the DIC is saying. pull the codes. normal gasoline at 100 octane wont do much on a car that doesnt need it but shouldnt hurt. E85 as mentioned above is a different animal so be sure of the actual type before you drain it out. I imagine that was an expensive fill up.

He said he only noticed something funny when the pump stopped at $95.00!

I would of thought price per gal would of been an indication...

was it race fuel? some of the race fuels have lead substitute that can reak havoc on the sensors.
where exactly do you pull up to the pump and get 100 octane?

He said he pulled into this station and went to the end pump in a line of four (as one should do), got out while talking on his cell phone (mistake #1), and just started pumping without noticing the words "race fuel" on the pump.
I wonder how many times he's put 87 octane in his car when not paying attention. Needless to say, he's not a car guy. I feel sorry for his 'vette.

Dilution is the solution. Have him add some 89 octane when he gets to 3/4 of a tank. It's the same thing gasoline companies do to give us the different octaine levels anyway. Premium gas is around 102 octaine at the refinery but is brought into spec by adding Dimate which blends the number down to the 92/94 we're all use to seeing at the pump.

sure,
but race fuel won't melt an engine down like e85 can if the car isn't tuned for it
if it's a fuel related code you can almost bet it's one of three. fuel trim lean, fuel trim rich or o2 failure in bank 1 or 2 or both
should take a couple seconds with the scan tool to pull codes and watch o2 voltage to see if the system is switching to closed loop when warm

Racebum...he spent 95.00 to fill it, its not e85 dude...jesus...stop going on about it. He put in high octane race gas, which has lead in it, end of story.

I stand corrected on the lack of lead. As for misinformed...sorry, but I reference my experience To answer questions versus referencing google on every post to act as a faux know-it-all like most here.
Having been tuning engine management systems for years, due to e85 and the general availability of it, I havent tuned a race gas car in years.

100 octane will not hurt anything besides performance. Most of the time our cars pull timing with fuel use of this octane.
So it may not run as well...but certainly will not hurt anything. I would speculate the current codes are not associated.
As stated above dilute it with 87-89 octane once at 3/4 - 1/2 tank.

Also, to whomever said it, you don't need a scan tool to check codes.
Post the codes OP. I'm going to guess it has something to do with the evap system....just a SWAG.

Explain why the engine would pull timing with higher octane fuel? It certainly won't be seeing knock retard.
