Cost of Ownership?

I had an 05 Mustang GT Vert that caught fire before I bought my Vette. Both are DDs and both get 20k+ miles a year.
What I learned:
* Z06 is cheaper on insurance
* Tires really don't cost all that much more... especially on a base Vette
* Corvette normal wear and tear stuff isn't much more than the Mustang.
* Corvette gets about 21MPG while my Mustang GT got high18s. The few extra MPGs are negated by needing premium
* Corvette is actually better in the snow
* Both are very stout and reliable
* Mustang will pick up more chicks

I purchased my '02 Z06 with about 48k miles a year ago. So far, have spent over $5,000 in repairs. Did a dyno tune also. Differential went south, wheel bearings, steering rack, electrical short on the alternator, now it's in for trans work (it's stuck in reverse).
Compared with my previous '99, I spent maybe half that amount in repairs over a 6 year span.
Good luck.

Well my Texas
So, my COST OF OWNERSHIP really increased today. So my trans was stuck in reverse. A $3.42 snap ring slid out of place. $649 to R&R rear diff assembly, and then $203 to remove trans exct housing/replace reverse fork c-clip. $936 our the door. So $1,600 in the last MONTH!!! F8CK ME!!!!!

I would say the the base c5 is easy on the pocket book(especially if you run it easy), I haven't spent a dime other then maintenance and gas so far. That having been said I'm coming up on my first repair (stock clutch) and it is going to cost more then I want, but not much more then other standard trans cars. You might look for one in which the clutch has already been upgraded, the OEM clutch problems are well documented

One day you'll find yourself being more concerned with your personal health than your cars'. Going in you should know Vettes are expensive to maintain especially if you don't wrench. If I couldn't have afforded one I'd have never bought one. It took me long enough to find mine but I made sure I could afford to spend what it would take to keep it first.

This seems to be a troll post more than anything because a Mustang fan would not consider a vette and a vette fan would not consider a mustang. They are night and day. A mustang is really not a sports car. Yes its a muscle car but its a sedan and not a comparison to a two seat sports car.

I was with you until your last note. Not sure how it is in PA but a vette will pull way more chicks than a Mustang around my parts. It's not even close.

The only possibility will be the new model that will come out next year; completely redone.

the 350z and mustang gt have a draw in that 12-15k range. you can get nice lower mile newer cars for the price of an older, higher mileage c5. if you live in an apartment and can't wrench on your cars or don't know how to work on your car it would be a serious consideration if that's all you can spend.

depends on what breaks. the aftermarket will still support mechanical. where it really sucks is when you need a body part if you smack a curb or some plastic interior part breaks. you then have to track one down at the salvage yard.
i had a late c4 that i sold in 2006 and remember looking everywhere to try and find a few parts for it. front impact curb bars, little $25 skid plates were absolutely impossible to find. had a seatbelt seize. took hours of being on the phone to find the right color.

Just ran a report in Quicken on my 2001 Coupe that I bought new 12/23/00. It has been my DD ever since.
"Average monthly cost" over the past 12+ years is $641 or nearly $2.00/mile so far.
$44,000 for the car
+ Interest paid on loan
+ Fuel & Oil, etc.
+ 3 Extended Warranties
+ Car polishes etc.
+ Insurance
+ Tires
+ Maintenance part out of pocket
+ about $10,000 in mods (mostly cosmetic - no high performance)
Does not include $16,000+ picked up by GMPP Warranties
