Default Recommended Tire Size? Can I run a 285 vs 295?

Backstory: Close to purchasing a set of wheels (17x9, 18x10.5) but they are in need of tires. I have two tires for the front (17"), but I will be purchasing a set for the rear (295/35/18).

My question is, could I get away with running a 285mm diameter tire vs the 295mm? What are the downfalls to running this tire? Is the stretch too much or does that vary from manufacturer?

Thanks!

It depends on what size tire (diameter) your running in the front.
You need to make sure that your rear tire is at least 0.5" or more larger diameter in the rear.

See my web site for details on how to properly size your tires to make sure you don't have active handling, or traction control issues.

http://toquez06.com/

Scrol down to link "How to Determine the correct tire size for new wheels on a C5 and C5 Z06."

295/35/18 = 26.1" diameter
285/35/18 = 25.9" diameter

What is the diameter of your front tire ? What is the size ?

Please also verify the actual tire vendor specs to ensure the diameter is correct.
The calculator on my web site gives may not reflect actual sizes from different vendors.

Im running a 275/40/17 in the front.

Any negatives from not keeping GM's staggered setup? The car is a daily/street fun, no track use.

I depends on the diameter difference between the front and rear tires.

I put 255/45/17 26.1" O/D front and 285/40/18 27" O/D rear to replace my non Z06 sizes. Per Tire Rack's spec charts these sizes will fit the base or the Z06 size wheels. I put them on the Z06 wheels

Good luck with your choices

The 275/40/17 tires are 25.7" O/D.

The problem with not keeping the stagger from front to back is that it upsets the computer active handling and traction control.

Haha well my ABS board is out, so in this case (this one only) it doesn't really matter to keep the stagger. I haven't been using my traction control/ABS/Active handling (good treaded tires, big brakes, and good driving to counter) as of late. Thanks Toque and QC. I will keep this thread in mind when im making my tire decision. Thanks for the help!

Rear - 285/35/18 = 25.9" diameter
Front - 275/40/17 = 25.7" diameter

Difference of 0.2" (being larger on the rear).

This is NOT enough for the active handling system.

But since you don't have the active handling/TC system anymore you should be good to go

You saved me $100+

The difference in tire prices between 285/35/18 and 295/35/18 is crazy.

Which of the two would you reccomend? Goodyear Eagle F1 (285/40/18) vs Nitto NT555 (285/35/18)?

I'm not a GoodYear fan....

Ask around, you might find some folks running that size and they may be able to help with some info.

I'm not a fan of Goodyear either although I have some.

The 285/35/18 will also keep your speedometer closer to accurate than the 285/40/18 tires since you have a Z06 that came with 295/35/18. (On the base cars the 285/40/18 is closer than the 295/35/18 or 285/35/18 to the 275/40/18 tires that came on them).

You could probably get away with running a 285mm diameter tire, but there are some potential downfalls. The main one is that the stretch might be too much, which could cause problems with the tires fitting properly on the rim. Additionally, it's worth noting that tire manufacturers often have different recommendations for tires of different sizes, so you'll want to make sure you're choosing a set of tires that are designed to work well together. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide whether the benefits of running a slightly smaller tire are worth the risks.

Hey! This thread is only ten years old, the other thread you posted on is 14 years old. Keep trying, you're heading in the right direction, you'll be posting on current, relevant threads before you know it.
