Default stock shifter height

How high does the stock shifter stick up from the center console? I have a feeling the previous owner of my c5 z06 installed a short throw. To the highest point of my stock shift **** in nuetral it's 5 1/4" Can someone measure their stock one and let me know? It just seems way too stiff to be stock. Thanks!

Anybody? I'm trying to figure it out without having to take it all apart.

If it is very stiff, it is most likely aftermarket. The stock shifter is quite loose and sloppy. All you have to do is pop shift boot loose for a peek.

Oh it's crazy stiff. I used to own a 2004 CTS-V and expected the z06 to be similar. Not even close. In neutral it takes some strength to flop it from side to side and it looked a lot shorter than I expected.

Probably a Hurst or something with centering springs.

If you don't like it, you might look at the MGW or C6Z shifter.

I might do that. It's pretty darn stiff.

Do the anti-venom mod 1st. Costs about $1 and makes a big difference in the stiffness. Here's the write up on how to do it:

If you want a smooth easy shift then go with a C6Z shifter. I had an MGW and switched.

I'll try the mod first. I just read the other post about it and it's definitely worth a shot.

stock height is about 5 and 3/4 inches. Check out this writeup I did back in spring when I installed my MGW, I included pics of stock vs. short throw.

I would try the anti-venom first. Even with the MGW, which I have, it is smoother and more exact, but the shorter shifter does decrease leverage, requiring more effort for making shifts. I ended up getting the longer shifter with my MGW. I get the preciseness for road racing with the comfort for dd. Good thing about shifters, is they are not hard to change, and you can get good deals on used ones to try until you find the one you like. I have had stock shifter, C6 shifter, B&M shifter and MGW. Good luck with choice.

What should the stock shifter look like? I took the boot off but that didn't really tell me anything.

The one on the right is a stock C5 shifter, and the one on the left is the RSD "Snap shifter" IIRC. HTH.

Does the stock shifter have a couple of set screws on the side? Mine had set screws.

The stock shifter does not. In screws down and then has a demon key to hold it straight. If you look at the RSD shifter in the pic, you can see where it actually has a bolt hole at the bottom where the shifter is bolted to the shaft. It is actually a C6 shifter that has been shortened and threaded for C5 ****. If you can post of pic of yours, someone can identify it.

Looks like a modified stock shifter.
