Default Pennzoil Ultra

I have a free oil change coming on my 03 Z06 and I wanted to check to see if the dealership would be putting in Mobile 1 oil. They told me that they no longer use Mobile 1 oil and moved to Pennzoil Ultra. They said that is better then Mobile One. My owners manual says to use Mobile one 5w-30 and do not know about making the change. What is your opinions on the using Pennzoil Ultra?

M1 is a slightly heavier oil, HTHS being the same on both. You'd have to view some virgin oil analysis to compare the additive package. I'd imagine they are close to the same though.

Pennzoil Ultra is an excellent synthetic oil. Whether it's better than Mobil 1, I don't know but it is factory fill for Ferrari. I regularly use it in my cars.

You will get hundreds of opinions on which oil is best but as far as I am concerned, if the oil meets the GM4718M specification, then that's enough for me.

Your owners manual does not say to use mobil 1. It says to use an oil that meets the GM standard. GM4718M has been replaced by Dexos 1 now. But yes, as mentioned above oil opinions are like the appendix. Everyone has one but no one is really sure why. Get a used oil analysis on each oil after the same amount of miles and that will tell you which oil is better. The way it is told here, GM 6 quarts of mobil 1 on a drawing board and said build me an engine around this.

I still use Mobil 1 in mine but wouldn't have a problem using Penzoil in it either.

Sorry, may just be personal opinion, but way, way back in the day, tore down waayyyyy too many sludge and parafin laden "Pennzoil" engines to EVER trust their products. Again, this was a long time ago, but they were reputed to have the highest levels of parafin additives, etc.

Like I say, don't know for absolute fact but circumstantial evidence leads me to my conclusion and I am happy with it.

Edit: Two things I firmly believe in automotively.....Autolite for spark plugs, period. Valvoline for non-synthetic motor oil, period. Have stuck to both of these and have had nothing but the best of results. Obviously for my 'Vette, I use synthetic oil. GM says Mobil 1, good enough for me....

I've used both, can't notice a difference with the 3,000 miles a year that I drive.

I'll stick with Mobil 1! Wouldn't put Pennzoil on a bicycle chain.

Agree with the "any oil that meets the manufacturer's specs" philosoply. Exxon probably paid GM hansomely to factory fill Mobil 1... and Ferrari no doubt had a similar agreement with Royal Dutch Shell, the oil giant that owns Pennzoil.

It's a long story, but the cliff notes are that I got 6 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra for free last year. I ran it in my car, and my non scientific ears told me that there was less of the "normal" C-5 valvetrain noises...

You know what? I also found that there was less valve train noise when using Pennzoil Ultra. But, I made the mistake of posting my findings on this forum and was basically told that it was my imagination.

If Pennzoil Ultra meets GM4718M (and it does), then there is absolutely no reason not to use it in our Vettes, in spite of what the Pennzoil haters say.

LOL

The LS1 is a basic small block Chevy like what is in millions of passenger cars and trucks, it's not like it's an BMW S54 for example that requires some exotic oil. Any synthetic 5W30 would probably be fine, I'm sure the vast majority meet GM4718M.

year's ago my friend had a 1994 GSX eclipse...which he had bought almost brand new..and only used Pennzoil in his car..was pretty tight on a 3000 mile oil change ..the car was mint..he was reaching over 100k on his GSX..and it was ticking like all mitsubishi's do, but his was a a nasty tick..so i went over to his house to see if i could figure out wht was wrong, took off the valve cover and the sludge build up was amazing, like you could take your finger and slide it down the inside of the cover and have all kinds of sludge build up on your finger...lol

Pennzoil before the synthetic stuff use to have a parafin based baseoil. Which actually was a pretty terrible oil and I've seen some crazy sludge in motors. The new synthetic stuff does not have the same baseoil.

Edit: Stuff like this will give you nightmares. http://www.f150forum.com/f4/you-want...-sludge-74045/

^^ Not blaming Pennz for that, just what real sludge looks like.

I think I will stick with what I always use, and that is Mobile 1 5w-30. Thanks for the input.

As longas it meets the manufacturers spec, I'd say it is fine.
