My exhaust pipes are really black and sooted up and I assume it is from running way to rich.It is a 2001 C5 bone stock A4.Do I need to get a tune to correct this.I submitted this in the tech forum but got no response.I will appreciate any help.Thank you.

No not really these ls1 motors just run rich if you want to look at it by the pipes being black. Better rich than lean in these cars. If it is bone stock and being a 2001 put a few cans of inj cleaner in it to help if it is sticking some on those. sea foam is the best... Again if 100% dont worry about it after the sea foam inj cleaner.. Robert

Normal on all C5's. Just clean and polish them every time you wash the car.

pull a plug, if it is black, you are running rich, white you are lean, tannish brown, perfect.

You should get a tune anyhow. You won't believe the difference it makes in a A4.

Agree completely - ECS Tuned my '01 A4 and got rid of the hesitation the car had when you applied the gas to access the hiway off a ramp PLUS now the transmission and the gas pedal are more in sync

Thanks everyone.FWIW I only use Chevron Premium and I don't drive in the winter or at night.I also have a catch can installed but I get very little oil in it.
