Default 3.90's or 4.10's for a Non-Race Weekend Driver with ~400 RWHP?

I have read numerous post on the subject, but most of them were either old, or a lot of the replies ran the 1/4 mile.

Are there any of you out there that went with 4.10's and use your car as the weekend driver with the occasional spirited driving?

I don't race, have no plans on racing, am going to stay NA with the goal to be around the 450-475 RWHP range.
I have new Firestone Firehawk Wideoval runflats, and will most likely keep them.

So if I had 4.10's, my questions are:
1. Will a mildly/medium aggressive launch from let's say a traffic light just spin? I'm not talking dump the clutch!
2. Is it an instantaneous shift from first to second?

I went from ordering 3.90's to 4.10's and keep second guessing myself.

Thanks!
~Joe

Is your car a z06? If so, yes the 1-2-3 will be VERY quick with 4.10's. If you have the standard ratio tranny, then the 4.10's will be perfect.

4.10s for MN6 I drive my ride the same way you do..street only now. Huge fun factor!

Answers to your questions:

1. Will a mildly/medium aggressive launch from let's say a traffic light just spin? I'm not talking dump the clutch! No, as long as you lean on it with controlled throttle.

2. Is it an instantaneous shift from first to second? No

Sorry for the missed info. It's a MN6.
I also e-mailed TJ from RPM and he said teh 4.10 will be perfect.

I'm amped!

I have 4.10's with heads/cam/headers/cutouts/Vararam on my MN6 coupe and it really woke up the setup. Tons of fun and really makes great use of the gear ratios all the way up to 6th. You'll find yourself in 4th where you previously would have used 3rd and in 5th when yould would be cruising in 4th. You will be shifting through the gears more quickly but it's not instantaneous.

I just installed 3.90s in my Z along with doing some head work and swapping the cam. I love it!!! I am going to have to go with a stickier tire in the summer though. The Invos just aren't doing it.
With a MN6 you should have a riot with 4.10s.
By the way, I don't drag race, but I do drive the car hard whenever I'm in it and the new gears and cam have made me fall in love with the car all over again.

MStrahan...this is my ultimate goal! After reading 118 posts on 3.90's vs 4.10's, my head is about to explode...but am feeling much better that I picked the 4.10's for my MN6. I'm also doing a cam swap and adding a Fast 102 Intake & TB. So I'm hoping the SOTP feeling is dramatically improved. (Coming from 348 RWHP with 3.42's)

Have a good one!

I have cam only with long tube headers. 409 rwhp. I just drive my car on nice days. I decided with the 3.90s myself.

My FRC had 3.90's on it when I bought it. Was my first experience with gears, and very noticeable from the stock 3.42's that were on my coupe. Combine the gears with the torque of the 402 and blower... Holy fun bags.

The seat of the pants otherwise known as the Butt Dyno is absolutely improved.
4.10s with your transmission is the perfect fit. I talked long and hard with the shop owner who works on my car and he said that if my car wasn't a Z then he would certainly recommend 4.10s.
Changing the gears puts you in the power band so much faster than stock gears. You're going to love it.

Would someone pass along what the engine RPM is at 70 with the 4:10 gears in 6th gear. I am accustomed to the old hotrod 4 speeds and I took the 4:10's out of mine rather than run 3000 rpm just driving down the road at highway speeds and shift out of lst at 20 mph. In the hotrod the 4:10's were great on the strip but not suited for any real road trips.

With 3.90's, I'm turning about 1800-1850 rpms at 70. So with 4.10's I'd think you'd be around 2000 rpms.

To 3.90's or 4.10's for a Non-Race Weekend Driver with ~400 RWHP?

I have 3.90s in my 97 A4 4K stall and around 500 RWHP NA
I have 4.10s in my 01 MN6 and around 520 rwhp NA
Either is a good but a set of sticky tires will be in order either way

There's a chart on here somewhere if you run a search. But to answer your question...

At 70 MPH: (with a MN6 trans)

3.42's would be 1500 RPM's
3.73's would be 1650 RPM's
3.90's would be 1725 RPM's
4.10's would be 1800 RPM's (And apparently you can actually pass someone in 6th gear)
I've also read the highway fuel loss with 4.10's is approx ~2mpg

Quick Reply: 3.90's or 4.10's for a Non-Race Weekend Driver with ~400 RWHP?
