Default Trunk not popping up enough?

Just picked up an 04 CE Z06 and getting acclimated to the Vette community. When I hit the trunk release button on the fob or the dash, the deck lid pops up but not high enough to get a finger at it to open it. Is this a common problem? I would assume that when the latch is popped, it should pop the deck lid high enough so it can actually be opened.

The Z06 shares the convertible trunk lid. I have this page bookmarked to eventually tackle on my Z06: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...up-enough.html

I replaced the Tonneau Cover Struts and lubricated the latch. I didn't believe lubricating the latch would make a difference, I did it anyway and it made big improvement.

Yes, what you describe is a common problem and adding a set of those springs does make a difference. Should work like new once installed.

I read this thread and all of the linked threads. This one fixed my problem with no extra parts and no visible changes to my car,: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...up-enough.html.

The correct fix is put new struts on. They are not expensive and you may still have the original ones on. My 02 had original on the deck lid and read cover. By replacing them it was amazing how worn out they were.

In my experience this "fixes" the issue, but only for a short time. A few months after putting in new trunk lid struts the issue (gradually) returned.

MetalMan: Your link was how I found the one I used.
I put new struts on and it didn't make any difference.

New struts and lubing the latch worked perfectly on my Z. Didn’t really like the look of any of those spring kits.

the link above about adjusting the factory spring under the carpet sounds promising as well.

For me it was a long term fix. If the strut is failing it will continue to fail and not hold the lid up.

Sounds like we need to know which struts you bought

If the trunk lid bangs you in the head in a gentle breeze, you definitely need new struts/gas springs.
It makes sense to periodically lubricate things regardless of whether the struts are good, or not.
My gas springs "only" lasted twenty years and the replacements are cheap.

Just off the shelf struts. But I don’t have stubby fat fingers.

true. Most of these struts have never been replaced. As long as the hold the lid up they are considered good enough.

The truth is the struts are failing.

You can put a spring on or you can fix it right. Same with failed struts you can prop it up or fix it right.

‘Keep in mind some struts can be poor quality or the wrong pressure too I’d you do not take care yo get the correct ones. Just because they are the right size does not mean they are the right pressure for weight. SUV tailgates have had issues here. Many struts are not able to hold the heavier parts when they may have been made for a truck cap window.

Use care in choosing.

I’m in the shut the door with the windows closed boat. It creates plenty of pressure to give the trunk lid a little more openness.
