Pulling the Mota gotta question..
after the #5 intake valve spring broke the valve did indeed fall into the path of the piston. The valve ended up wedged vertically in the head and the #5 piston beat it until a hole developed in the top of the piston. I have to pull the mota and i have been working on it for a few days now off and on.
This is where i am: I have to pull the mota from the top. I dont have the equipment to drop it from below. I have disconnected and unbolted everything that i can see necessary and from reading threads on the topic. the mota is loose and clear BUT...i cannot get it "unsplined" from the torque tube. I have app.1.5" to 2" of clearance/gap between the bellhousing and the mota but i cant get it to go any farther. There is no obstruction in the front of the mota preventing it from going forward. I am concerned that there is something im missing on getting the mota "uncoupled" from the torque tube. My understanding is that it should come uncoulped by just pullng the mota forward as long as it was not in a bind. wigglying and prying has gotten me about 2" of clearance. Idk why it will not go any more. I guess i need reassurance from someone who knows that I am not doing anything harmful by continuing on this path. Have i missed something? am i correct in my understanding that the mota and torque tube is only splined together and should slide out if aligned and not binding? I am attempting to pull the entire clutch assembly still attached on the flywheel. would i be better off unbolting the clutch from the flywheel? I need to hear from someone with detailed experience on this. Really appreciate the help.

How much damage was done? What were you doing when the spring broke? Could you hear the engine note change?

Hey bud. How much clearance are you working with in the engine bay? Im assuming your obviously using a cherry picker and you've taken the hood off. I ask because you're gonna need more than 2 inches of clearance between the torque tube housing and the flywheel. The input shaft is a good 5-6 inches in length and wont come easy out of the clutch with a severe engine angle on a solid drivetrain assembly unless you have good room to push the engine forward toward the nose of the car. You might consider removing the ac condenser and radiator to give yourself plunty of wiggle room with the mota. Good luck man, and props on doing the work yourself like a real man. Any questions just ask.

appreciate the encouragement and the suggestions. i didnt have to pull the radiator or fans. i did have to leave the clutch behind but no biggie. btw i did it completely alone, so it can be done and prob done easier if ya got a buddy or 2 for the extra hands and eyes.
and wow i didnt realize i was dealing with such a sophisticated bunch of snobs, next post ill spell check. you yanks gotta learn to speak redneck.

I run a printing press for a living, and I'm no stranger to getting my hands dirty. I think this makes me exempt from your "sophisticated snob" comment. Also, I was born in a time, and a place that your term, "yank", is irrelevant.(1953/Idaho) It would seem that some southroners are still hoping for a different result. Congratulations on pulling your engine by yourself. I recently did a clutch installation, but I don't think I'm brave enough to pull my engine singlehanded. Good luck getting it rebuilt, and back in your car.
