Default Driving a Veteran to Corvette Museum

I signed up to drive a Veteran from Ft. Campbell to the Corvette Museum. I am so excited and can't believe that I am actually doing this. My daughter and I will be driving the 02 coupe from Laurel, Md. to Bowling Green, Kentucky (700 miles) and driving an American Hero to the Museum and then touring the museum and then touring the GM assembly plant. After that we will go to the banquet and then drive back the next day. The Vette is ready and we are really looking forward to this trip. It should be a great experience and maybe we will meet some other forum members. Thanks, Bill (laurelboy)

Great to see things like this... If you have never been since all the new openings you really will like it...

Where did you "sign up" ? I had not heard of this before.

Oops, just looked at the top of the page. Going to check into this.

My thread about this event was made into a sticky. It includes a link to the Corvette Museum website for more info and registration.

If you participate, I heard that President Obama will waive all future federal income taxes for life and provide access to free gasoline at any military facility...

John, this is going to be a great experience for us. The honor of driving these guys and with a state police escort, those 50 Corvettes are going to be awesome riding down the road to the Museum and honoring them. I can't wait to see the museum and all the festivities. My daughter and I are also going to tour the assembly plant. This will truly be a once in a lifetime experience. Bill

I also participated in an organized cruise from Louisville to Bowling Green for the Corvette Museum 15th Anniversary celebration. The head honcho of the Kentucky State Police drove a C6 as the lead car and it was fully marked as a State Trooper with lights. We also has a fully marked C5 bringing up the rear with a few Crown Vics clearing traffic along the way down the interstate. We ran in the fast lane the whole way and let's just say that speed limits were null and void. It was pretty darn cool. This event will be even better since we get escorted coming and going!

I noticed there is a drivers meeting at the NCM the morning of the 29th before heading out to Fort Campbell. Since I only live about 20 miles from Fort Campbell it looks like I get to drive to Bowling Green early that morning then down to the post and back to the NMC all before lunch. Sounds like fun!

I assume we will take US 68W out of Bowling Green down to Hopkinsville where we swing due South on 41A to the post. 68 is a 4 lane divided highway that's in pretty good shape for it's age. It does have a 55mph speed limit so it will be interesting to see how our escort handles that. I just remembered that the Pennyrile Parkway which used to end in Hopkinsville has just had it's final section completed and was opened this past weekend. It runs from Hopkinsville to I24 which is just a few miles north of Fort Campbell, so that could be the last leg instead of 41A.

If you are not familiar with that part of Kentucky will will get to see something very unusual. About 50 miles or so outside of Bowling Green you will see on your left going down the Jefferson Davis Monument, a 351 foot tall cast concrete obelisk marking the birthplace of the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. It looks just like the Washington Monument in DC.

I would love to participate but it falls in the middle of the week and I could only make it if it were on a weekend. I still gonna try and work it out though.

I told my wife about it and she said "you need to do this". I'm looking forward to sharing war stories with a fellow vet!

What a great time that should be. Post up some pics of the event when you get back.
