Default Higher gas prices... maybe use lower octane to save gas?!?!

Ok before i want to state i have NEVER used anything under Premium gas.... and yes i know someone here is going to probably yell at me for even mentioning this.. but i want to hear some feedback regardless...

with gas prices in my area.. (buford,ga)
i paid 3.89 at my local Shell station this morning.. across the street was QT and BP.. also at the same price...

and from what i am reading prices are going to sore to record highs again...

i was wondering with the gas prices going up... what is the possiblity of using regular gas.. and adding an octane boaster?

a little math to be done...

Premium- 16 gallons x 3.89 = 62.29$ to fill up a full tank
regular- 16 gallons x 3.59 = 57.44$ +2.50 ocatane booster= 59.94$

i use 24 gallons a week roughly..
so in a month i spend..
Premium- 24x 3.89 x 4 weeks a month= 373.44$ a month for gas
Regular- 24x3.59 x 4weeks =344.64+6 octane boosters= 359.64 a month

so hopefully i didnt lose anyone with my crazy algebra... and i think i got that all right...

also as a side note.. i DO NOT know how much the ocatne booster raises the ocatne level, i have not checked this so with regular + octane booster i may not even get the desired results i want..

but... with the math we learned.. i spend either
373.44-premium
359.64- regular +booster
savings of-$13.80 a month

for most people thats nothing

for myself, being 21 and trying to make it on my own, thats alot! :-0

i would again like to state.. i know what kind of car i bought and i am in no way willing to comprise its integrity by trying to save 13.80 dollars a month... but ... if its okay to do it then i will def try to save the money..

thank you for taking the time to read, maybe respond, or just make of me! in the mean time i will continue reading the 1million posts about gas here

have a great day,

Matt

These cars were tuned for 91 octane. I refill at 1/2 tank 1 time 93 next time 89. Running 89 will cause absolutely no issues. 87 I imagine will cause some timing retard but will still work. But really $20 per month to drive this car is no big deal IMHO. I remember back in the day Sunoco had a pump you could select many different octanes I think it was 5. Wish they still had that because 91 was one of them.

sunoco had a pump that went from 190 to 260.

do not remember the octane equivalent as it was changed in the 70's.

7 increments and the fuel was all leaded.

my Z06 will be getting 93 octane.

Actually the cars are tuned for 93 octane out of the factory. The Corvette will automatically pull timing for each subsequent drop in octane. While you can put 87 in the car, my tuner said that you are running a risk putting 87 octane in and doing lets say a WOT pull even with a stock tune.

I can only get 91 octane and 100 so I have to mix 4 of 100 and 14 of 91 and whala 93 octane.

Another thing to note is the octane boosters are misleading....some will say they raise your octane 3 points...this does not mean it raises 89 octane to 92...it means 89.3...

'Points" means tenths while "number" means whole numbers. Very few boosters will raise your octane more than a few "points".....Torco and Lucas being the exception....Lucas can get 91 octane to about 98+ while Torco can hit 100+.......but you will spend $10+ per tank to get what you want..

Best to do as said..keep running 93 or at least 89...

BTW...the reason some areas sell 91 and some 93 is that higher elevations lower the need for higher octane...hence mainly high elevation areas sell 91..

Math aside - it will be much much cheaper than detonating your motor due to cheap fuel!

With the compression our Vette's run, they don't have us running 91 octane and higher just to support the fuel industry!

Usually Premium is .20 cents more than Regular 87 so for an extra $2 at a 1/2 tank of fuel or around $4-$5 for a full tank, I am willing to splurge here at the pump and not on a new bottom end

No savings in looking at it that way!

Thanks,Matt

The only octane booster that goes into my gas tank is Torco. Any octane booster that comes in a plastic bottle, is hi grade injector cleaner.

again as i said im 21 and im broke... i have my loan for a corvette to thank for that and i WOULD NOT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY..

so i try to look at saving money in every aspect... but its clear that i will just keep putting in the 93! which is not a problem..

and i had no idea abuot the points etc in the octane booster. i thought it did mean it goes from 89-92 and not just 89.3... great information thank you!

i hope everyone has a great weekend!

Even using your math, that's a savings of a whopping $13.50 a month!

Drive less, drive easier, reduce costs of something else to make up for the increase if it's that much of a financial burden.

I prefer to fill up with less gallons more often to lessen the bigger hit in the wallet.

Hell, I've still got some $4.00/gal gas from a few years ago in my car...

Luckily for me I have a Daily driver (06 GTI Turbo). I just replaced the plugs, and cleaned the K&N, and I went from 29mpg to 33mpg in the city.

My Z06 with heads/cam etc, is "tuned" for 93... Luckily for me I only fill up every 3 weeks or so though.

What you are proposing will almost certainly force you PCM into it's low octane tables and result in lower mileage defeating your purpose.

Just swiched from my HD2500 daily driver(9.5mpg) to my C5 6 speed (25mpg ave). Wonder if the cost savings will out weigh the depretiation/wear for the miles im putting on?

FYI: just paid 4.19 for 91 in so-cal.
