High pitch whine in my 97 C5
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas about the high pitch whine I hear in my 97 C5 when I stop at a red light or stop sign? The pitch seems to go up and down as you idle and goes away when you start to move. The auto trans is shifting smoothly and I have been told by some to check the power steering pump. I can't tell what the sound is coming from! Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks,,hthsbd

I have a whine from my 98, but it's coming from the supercharger
Seriously, does it sound like it might be coming from right behind you? If so it could be the fuel pump, which is located right in front of the drivers rear wheel. The early years had an issue with pump noise

Thanks for the input! I have replaced the belt, so I think that rules it out. No amp or aftermarket radio. Has the original and it works fine. The fuel pump is a possibility! It does seem to be coming from directly behind me. Not sure about the AC compressor, but the AC seems to be working fine. I will keep looking, but thanks so much for the advice!

I'm assuming the sound is from under the hood? Have you popped the hood and listed for it? If it's louder with the hood up, it's likely a pulley. You can isolate which one using a stethoscope. Other methods include bypassing the pullies one at a time until the noise stops.

my 01 does the same and I noticed that if I move the steering wheel slightly the sound stops. I only have to move the wheel about one half inch to one side or the other. Also I have no other steering issues. I think that if there is a slight steering input the pump makes that sound and by moving the wheel a little it puts the steering into a no load position. Of course that is just my working theory I have no proof.

Mine had whine/whistling sound that was coming from the alternator.
I used a 5/8 x 3' foot heater hose to isolate the noise.

the fuel pump whine had a recall bulletin on the problem way back in 97 so if the car has ever been serviced at a Chevy dealer they should have already replaced the original fuel pump. Replacement pumps were better design and should last a long time with no problems...mine was replaced in 97 and here I am 14 years later with no problem and 55k miles.
