My attempt at BSM removal
My car is 10 years old, and at nearly 100,000 miles. I was worried about removing the BSMs that have been there for the entire life of the car. Here's the results:
I started with one of the small pieces near the side cove to see what the paint looked like underneath. I used a hairdryer to heat up the BSM glue, and used dental floss to "cut" the glue. Here's what it looked like:
I saturated the residue with "Goo Gone" and was able to easily wipe and pick it away. Which resulted in this:
This is where good old fashioned scrubbing comes into play. Which will give you:
Used the same technique for the larger part of the BSM, though it was a bit more difficult.
It's not *perfect* as there are still some tiny outlines where the BSMs were from the glue but the paint looks the same as the exposed paint after over 10 years and 100k miles. I suspect that after a bit of time with the BSMs off after a few washes it will be even better.
Plan on doing the drivers side tomorrow.

Now that the BSM's are off of my car, I think I'm going to make them into a pair of awesome sparring swords. Now THAT would be awesome and non nerdy.

those 'ghost' outlines of the BSMs are permanent...when I did my 97 a couple years ago I thought they would buff out, but it turns out it is actually paint damage caused by grit that gets into the door/bsm interface and sticks to the edge of the adhesive. over time it affects the paint surface and leaves an imprint. it isn't noticeable in daylight, but in florescent light in my garage I can see the outline. in a way it's a blessing if I ever want to reinstall the BSMs.
