Default ZO6 vs. GSX-R 1000

Check out the April 2002 issue of Motorcyclist magazine, there is a Bike vs. Car shootout between a 2002 ZO6 and a Suzuki GSX-R 1000,they used the Willow Springs race track which is the same track Car and Driver used for their 1996 Car vs. Bike shootout (Viper GTS/Yamaha YZF 1000),it makes for some good reading.

I have not read it yet, but my bike friends tell me the bike was 10 seconds faster a lap.

Bike cornering speeds are limited relative to a good sports car with sticky tires because of their rather small tires, but on a "power track" like Willow Springs they can usually make it up on the front and back straights. Still, ten seconds seems like a lot.

Hope someone can post the lap times and other test data. Also, did the bike have the OEM production tires or did they reshod it with racing tires? That can make a big differnce! Most big displacement sport bikes will fry the OEM tires pretty quick on a racetrack.

At Willow Springs the best lap times were:
1:34.6 for the ZO6
1:26.6 for the GSX-R.
At the drag strip the ZO6 ran 0-30 in 2.31 seconds,0-60 in 4.80,0-100 in 11.19 and through the quarter-mile in 12.81 @ 111.4 mph.
The GSX-R hit 30 mph in 1.45 seconds,60 in 2.84,100 in 5.32,and ran the quarter-mile in 9.87 @ 144.87 mph.
0-100-0 the ZO6 made it in 16.41 seconds, the GSX-R did it in 11.01,the bike ran from 0-100 mph and back to zero and was stopped before the Vette reached 100 mph.

Willow Springs Track Records:

Bikes - http://www.race-wsmc.com/riderinfo/mclaprecords.htm
Autos - http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/records.html

I am not sure where the ZO6 falls in this or what times were posted. However, the difference in times the bikes run on this track are not that significant, actually. Although 10 seconds may not be far off. The big 8-9 turn, and the killer turn 3-4-5-6 combo is going to bomb the bike times, I would think. Off camber turns are sick. Anyone have the numbers that were posted for the article, or is it just editorial yad-yada-yada?

At the drag strip the ZO6 ran … quarter-mile in 12.81 @ 111.4 mph.

They could at least try to make it look like actually attempted to drive that thing.
I mean, come on! We all know Z06 had no chance in ¼ anyway, so it wouldn’t change the results.
This makes me think how accurate road test comparison really was

If a biker is driving the Z06 in the test, do they still stick their knees out on the inside corner? Because they would have to open the door to do this, this might explain the big time difference! :D

When I was racing in EP back in the mid-seventies the BP Corvettes were running Willow in the low !:30s, so a production Z06 in showroom stock trim is running what an average SCCA prepared small block Corvette on slicks could do 25 years ago. Note bad at all IMO.

12.8 quarter, 0-60 in 4.8... what was driving that Vette? They should be ashamed.

Willow Springs is at about 2500 ft. elevation. They don't really have a quarter mile there, but the main straight could probably be used with typical automotive test equipment.

The other alternative would be to do the quarter mile testing at LA County Raceway, but it is at about the same elevation as Willow, so times will typically be off by about half a second compared to sea level testing.

They put a telemetry unit on the bike and Z06 and had a nice chart showing the speeds at all points along the track. The bike actually had higher cornering speeds than the Z06, which surprised me. I think there was only one corner where the Z was slightly faster on the track, and it was just for a second. Both the bike and Z had aftermarket 'street legal' race tires put on them before the testing.

I looked at the test numbers that MotorTrend did on a 2002 Z and they had significantly better 0-100-0 times (somthing like 13.5 vs the 16 by Motorcyclist), but maybe it was due to elevation differences where they each tested the car.

The biggest thing that bugged me was that they put different tires on each, the put like michelins on the Z06 which wouldn't be any better than the stock tires. I dunno anything about bikes, so for all I know they may have thrown the equivalent of autocross tires on there. The guy driving did have auto experience but he runs a motorcycle racing school and the dumb a s s fumbled around most the laps with the traction control on, then he goes and adjusts the bikes suspension for it to go faster. Atleast this time th car only costs 5 times as much when the last Car and Driver test said it would cost 10 times as much to go as fast in a car.

I think maybe I should have been there as a car guy to drive each. I've never driven a powerful road bike and I'm sure my times would reflect a much faster time in the Z than the bike (if they didn't have to carry me out in a plastic bag after driving the bike!). If they averaged my scores with the published ones, the Z would still look pretty good!:D
