IMHO, upgrading the MM6/M12 to 30 splined output shaft and doing all the mentioned upgrades on this thread (you have to respline your pinion gear to 30 splines) should make your driveline pretty bulletproof.

Where can I get that light blue jig? That's nice.

That is a GM essential tool. All dealerships have them and they are called Kent Moore.

Any chance that you can detail how to use that Kent Moore tool to set up the pinion ring gear?? If I can understand how all that works, I would be set.

Do you know if the ^^C6 Z06 pinion support in this pic^^ will work the the OEM bearing or will I have to get the Z06 bearing too? Do you have part numbers on both parts (if I need the bearing too)? Thanks!!!

The C5 bearings will not interchange but the the new C6 Z06 pinion carrier comes with both inner and outter bearings. GM part # 89060110.

Thank you sir! And this will bolt in with no issues (ie I wont have to re-shim it?)

Before you spend a lot of cash and wont be able to use the parts that you get,,,,,I believe that you will have to properly set up the pinion and differential side bearings if you replace those parts!!!!!

. Thats what prevented me form up-grading that portion of the rear-end. It takes special alignment tools and knowledge to do the pinion. Its not a simple procedure if you don't know what your doing. Google that Kent Moore alignment tool that listed in the post and you will see whats involved.

" Here is the calculation on C5 pinion shim setup:

B1 = pinion & drivers side measurement (need Kent Moore tool J42168)
B = 0.197"
B - B1 = B2

A1 = numbers on pinion gear
A = nominal value of 4.055"
A1 - A = B3

B2 + B3 = pinion shim thickness "

Bill

Bill is correct that replacing the pinion carrier WILL change the pinion shim measurement. I have always replace the pinion carrier along with the gears so I have always performed the measurement Bill have listed.

Also, the calculation listed above is only for setting the pinion shim and not the side bearing shims. The shortest time I have set up a diff shim (all 3) is about 2 hours. The longest? 8 HOURS!!!!!!!!!

Just so everyone knows, if the shims are not done correctly, you WILL waste a good set of gears and will have to start this procedure over.

Ok so if I just change out the RH shaft, gear and cross shaft in my DTE Stg 2 diff will I have to SHIM or align anything or is it just bolt in and go, the diff only has 1500 miles on it but has a OE right shaft. Thanks for all the help

You can replace the shafts and the right side gear without setting the shims. IMHO the left shaft is the weak link but with all the upgrades, it's pretty bulletproof. I have guys running over 700 to 800 RWHP with this setup without issues.

THANK YOU for putting together this FANTASTIC post. Between your post and "Its Go Time's" post, doing differential mods and up-grades are now very simple and I feel good about doing the process my self.

For those that are NOT famular with Its GO Times Post, heres the link:

Thank you again!

These two post should be STICKIES or at least C5 C6 Tech Tips
