Yep. We're told NOT to discuss our personal lives with students. Some teachers do it anyway (excessively) and the kids talk about them and spread rumors. It can become a big distraction (for other teachers doing their job) in the classroom. The kids are there to learn, not socialize with teachers.

"Ah, Mr Johnson, thank you for your contribution. While I'm not confident I can help you with your lack of a comprehensive understanding of american sport cars (there are no six cylinder corvettes by the way), I can assure you I will do my best to improve your understanding and use of the English language. Shall we proceed ?"

Ok, ok, so at the price of ruining my carefully crafted comeback, you come along and cloud the issue with facts.
I stand corrected

I, too, am a high school teacher (Drafting, Cabinetmaking/furniture building), in a small rural high school (about 200 in grades 9-12) 31 years experience all at the same school. I don't drive my Corvette to school very often, but the kids know that I have it. As a rule most of the kids are cool about it, there are some who always want to challenge you and say stupid things. I just laugh and move on. After that many years you learn not to let things get to you. I remember early in my career, something like that would have set me off, but like someone said, it's their way of showing jealousy.I also wouldn't ask most of our kids about their cars (I already know), but most of the kids who drive cars, drive cars that are nicer, newer, and more expensive than what the teachers drive. Me with my Corvette am an exception, although it's not new by any means.

Well several of my teachers in high school and professors in college were able to discuss non subject related matter on a professional level. Contrary to populary belief, teachers are also human and have human tendencies to socailize also. My mom just retired from 30 years as a teacher took her profession very seriously. She also made it a point to be just as strict as personable to be able to relate to the students. Unfortunately not all students have the same learning processes and abilities so trying to de-humanize education is quite unrealistic. I guess we should have subjects taught by robots instead of humans right?
