Default Any Luck With GM/Chevrolet?

It appears that my 2004 may have developed the infamous crossover tube leak. The tank is being pulled this afternoon to determine whether it's the crossover, fuel pump module assembly or somewhere else on the tank (vent valve maybe). My guess, based on reading through multiple threads and because my car falls within the VIN range of tanks affected by the Special Coverage Adjustment, is that it's the crossover tube/quick connector leaking.

I understand that the updated coverage only ran for 10 years from the date the car went into service or 100,000 miles. Whichever came first. My car has just over 40,000 miles, but obviously the 10 year limit has been surpassed.

My question is, has anyone been able to get GM/Chevrolet to cover the cost of replacement past either/both of these limits? The car hasn't been tracked and receives regular maintenance. I find it hard to believe that a known defect can't/won't be covered by the manufacturer on vehicles with low mileage. In my opinion, if the vehicle makes it to 100,000 miles before exhibiting symptoms of this problem, then you've gotten your money's worth. Though, the safety aspect is still concerning, regardless of miles.

My car had 25k miles when it started to leak. GM told me to pound sand.

I ended up buying a C6 tank and crossover and replacing it my self.

I felt the same way and ended up fixing mine myself. I'm guessing your crossover bung is going to be cracked. Learn from my experience and replace both tanks.

Not what I wanted to hear, but expected as much.

It seems like some people with an A4 pull the transmission, but more for easier access than necessity. Do you guys have automatics, and if so, did you remove the transmission? TIA.

When my crossover was replaced last fall the dealer did NOT have to drop tranny. My car is a 2004 automatic .

Mine is a 6 speed. You can do it without dropping the transmission even an automatic. It ain't easy but it's doable.

Thanks for the info on the A4 guys. I appreciate it.

In doing more research on this issue I discovered that certain models of the Chevrolet Cobalt (07, 08, 09), Pontiac G5 (07, 08, 09), Chevrolet Equinox (07) and Pontiac Torrent (07) also experienced fuel leaks.

Originally, they had a special bulletin, but that escalated to a full-blown recall, I.E. no time or mileage limits. So, an '07 Cobalt with 200k miles can have its fuel leak fixed, but not a C5 with 40k miles or even less in many cases?

Just got a call from the Corvette technician at the dealership where I took it. They want $3472.12 to fix it.

I spent about 500 bucks on a new tank and cross over pipe from an 06 Z06..
it was a PITA doing it on my back in the garage..But it got done none the less..

I cant believe Gm and their poor decision making.

They quoted me $1195 for the tank alone. I still can't believe this never escalated into a full-blown recall.

I spoke with my dad since he's a car guy, too, and has some connections where he lives (about 1hr away). The dealership there estimated it would be $1,881. Granted, that's sight unseen and not a firm quote. Anyone had success price matching dealerships?

Yep. It's all about the bottom line and what's good for business I suppose.

This is probably a longshot, but does anyone know where I could find data regarding the reason why some bulletins have date/time limits and others do not? I believe the U.S. Code is in regards to "motor vehicle safety", and like 8VETTE7 said the NHTSA hasn't deemed this issue dangerous enough. I was just curious if there was something beyond what's contained in the Defect Investigation Results. All it states is:

GM does not believe the cracks represent an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety based on factors that include; low rate of fuel leaking to the ground, detectable fuel odor, the cracks are at the top of the tank, leaks are detectable during refueling, small quantities of fuel that leaks out, and no associated property damage or personal injury claims.

My repair cost last fall at a GM dealer was $2100.00 which was covered by a extended warranty. Checkout my earlier post # 657 which has a lot of the parts that they replaced.

Thanks! I'll price those out using GM Parts Direct, and local dealerships to see how far off my current quote is.

This is what I did as well except for the crossover tube I got from Rockauto, and the in-tank lines (that I had to cut to get the crossover loose) from Cultrag.

Got two more quotes from area dealerships so everything is pretty similar. Both of those checked in around $2,300. Neither one could really figure out where the extra $1,100 would come from.

I found two used tanks as well. One from Corvette Recycling for $379.99 and another from VetteNuts for $325. Both state that they're in excellent condition.

Looks like I'll have to either get the current dealership to move closer to my other three quotes, or get it put back together enough that it can get moved to another location where I have the tools to do it myself.

Doing it yourself is the way to go. I paid $100 for a tank off a low mile 2007 C6. Found it on Craigslist.

Does anyone know if a class action was ever filed on this matter in an attempt to get GM to issue a full recall? I searched various resources and made a few calls, but haven't found one.

I don't know. But I would guess their get-out-of-jail-free card (i.e., the gov't bailout of GM at taxpayer expense) washed all that stuff down the toilet. (please excuse my use of legal jargon)
