Washed my engine with a water hose today and guess what.
I have a clean engine.
I've been driving the car almost daily. It was about time for a good cleaning.
I Removed the fuel rail covers and stuffed a small piece of cloth in the gap under the intake to prevent water from getting to the knock sensors. Started the engine and let it run for about a minute, turned it off and installed the Ritz-Carlton shower cap over the alternator. The rag and the shower cap are probably not necessary but I do it anyway.
Sprayed everything in sight with Simple Green diluted to about 2 parts water 1 part green.
Hosed it down everywhere with a nice little sprayer I bought at Slowe's Hardware. It's adjustable for all kinds of patterns. For the places on the frame and such you can spray it hard and other places like around the coils you can adjust it like a shower.
I have a wet or dry vac that i rigged up with a small nozzle to vac the puddles out of all the crevices around the injectors and coils. The top comes off the vacuum to use as a blower/inflator and I use it to blow the rest of the water away while the engine is running.
If you are worried about water around the knock sensors under the intake, then let the engine run long enough to evaporate the moisture.
The pics are links to larger pics if you want to see more detail.
Click on the pics of before and after fuel rail to see the most dramatic difference.
Q-Tips are for ears, not for cleaning engines.

All cleaned up.

Shined up.
and covered up.
Have a nice day dammit.

wow this is amazing, good job. How exactly did you spray on the simple green/water mixture? Did you have some sort of detergent tank hooked up to your garden hose?

No, I just mix it up in a generic spray bottle. Spray it on the warm engine, let it set awhile, and rinse it off before it dries.
