Car rolls when parked in gear
Why does my car seem to keep rolling when it's shut off and parked with it in gear (any gear, even reverse)? It only rolls a little, and mainly on a grade, headed down. You can hear it slowly rolling for about 30 seconds.
Does this happen to anyone else?
Thanks

It's very slow and very little, but when I get out to leave it, I see the wheels slowly moving. Never had enough nerve to see how far it would go. I usually jump in and pull up the handbrake as far as possible.

That is not true. If you're on a steep incline it's possible for the weight of the car to overcome the compression of the motor and allow the car to roll backwards.
It sounds like you may have a worn out clutch disc which is slipping under the weight of the car.

I disagree.
Engine compression holds the car in place (assuming the clutch isn't slipping, and if was slipping that much you couldn't drive the car). The compression will leak past the rings if there's enough load on the engine over time (compression leak down test). So the car can move very slowly, even with a good clutch and a good engine.
Ask me how I know, and I'll tell you about a 5 spd Saab that almost ended up in the lake over a period of days after being parked on a hill.

Happens all the time with any manual transmission vehicle. The combination of weight, compression and parked on a hill will cause the car to move forward or backward depending on the direction of the hill. That's why they put handbrakes on them. I've driven manual trannys all my life and never had one that could be parked safely on a hill and not bump forward past the compression while in gear.

Park it in the reverse gear. I remember hearing that from somewhere; based on the high gear, it's the 'best choice'.. I always do, and I seldom use the handbrake. Works on inclines either way.

I'm having the same problem except the grade of the hills are almost nothing. The clutch is fine. My hand brake does absolutely nothing, and I'm pretty sure the shoes are glazed. Someone must have driven the car with the handbrake up. I'll be replacing those. I'm used to parking with the car in reverse and the handbrake up, but when I'm on an incline/decline more than 10%, I hear the car rolling a little bit.
