Default I did a bad thing

My yet to be employed son asked me to help him move home last week from college (he completed the Airframe and Powerplant program at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and is now a licensed A&P mechanic). He owns a 24 foot enclosed trailer, and needed a dually to pull it with.

I asked friend Bill Gillen if I could swap my 2000 C5 coupe (pictured in my avatar) for the long weekend (he owns a 2003 GMC Sierra dually with a Duramax engine). He said OK. He has owned two 'vettes in the past, but that was over 20 years ago.

After taking the 'vette on a trip to his family home, he told me he had forgotten just how much fun they were to drive. He then drove it to his business with his high school senior son riding along, and allowed his son to drive it home. Guess what his son is hammering him to buy now ? He told me with a big Corvette grin afterward, "I shouldn't have done that! You did a bad thing !" After I returned the dually, his son told me, "You take good care of my 'vette now."

I was worried there for a sec that he or his son crashed your Vette.

Sounds to me like you did a good thing!

Ok maybe it's just me, loaning your C5 to a friend is one thing, but allowing his HS son drive it would be a llitle too much for me to bare. Anyway, it's your car and I'm glad things worked out.

It was inevitable My father had a '63 and a '62 both sadly gone now, but when he drove my C5 for the first times it was ear to earn grins and I know he'll be picking up another.

You sure didn't do a bad thing - winning over a Corvette convert is a very positive thing.

Default No problem with HS son

I understand you completely, but if you knew his son, you wouldn't worry as much. His son races what is called an Outlaw Jr Dragster, which has an awesome power to weight ratio. The car (without driver) is around 200-225 lbs, and the single cylinder engine (basically 5Hp Briggs centerlines) pumps out well over 50hp. He is the current world record holder with a 4.188 second pass on the 330 foot course. No one talks about what the eighth mile time is, as they would get thrown out bodily from the sanctioning organization (NHRA). We do know it will dip into the six second range, which is way faster than my 'vette.

I really figured Bill was taking the bigger risk loaning me his dually, which I had to drive out there with all the nuts on the streets for a little over 1000 miles. Had a Sunfire blow a tire right in front of me, a Volvo S70 doing 70mph near me, riding on a nearly flat donut spare, and a Tundra run alongside of me with the right rear wheel/tire wobbling very vigorously. I got away from all of them ASAP, as those guys were accidents looking for a place to happen.
