Default Trouble painting rear fascia

I just got done applying 3 coats to the bottom part of my rear fascia and there are some small pits and scratches on it that the spray paint didn't adhere to. Would it help to re-sand the bumper some and repaint?

if it's rattle can paint you can wipe it all off with some automotive laquer thinner and start over, you need to clean it with a wax and grease remover before you paint it again!

It sounds like prep is the culprit. What did you use to wipe it down to remove all contaminants?

I used 1000 grit sand paper, then wiped it down with rubbing alcohol. I guess I gotta start over.

use green scotchbrite, it's a lot easier to sand with!

Default proceedure sequence

First you wipe down the surface with a good wax & degreaser, then lightly sand / scuff the surface . This way you aren't rubbing the contanimates into the paint. The 'fisheye' is the result of the contaminates.

The problem here is you used rubbing alcohol and then in the wrong order.

Bodyshops us special chemicals that remove oil, grease, silicones, waxes, etc before they get started.

The unfortunate part is you're now going to have to strip everything you just did and start over, you may have to even strip the entire fascia.

Go to an automotive paint supply store and get some Dupont Prep-sol. This is what the pros use because it's specially formulated to eliminate the issues you encountered.

Strip
Clean with Prep-sol
Sand
Prime
Paint
Clear

The final results all depend on the prep work....

i would not use a green scotchbrite. Go to a NAPA and get a red one. It'll allow for a good surface to get the coats to stick to. that's what almost every bodyshop uses to assist in prep.

Not trying to be crewel but would someone that owns a $50,000 + car really paint an exterior panel or fascia using a spray can?

Heck seen a full car painted by 3M rattle can. Looked great, from 10 feet.

It was a race car anyway so it really did not matter.

My father gave me a hand and sanded it down with a 400 grit and moved back up to 1000. He re-painted it and the area looks better, but not perfect. I just took the tape off, and I like the look. The rounded edges aren't as round as I like, but I can deal with that for now.

What kinda tape did you use? If i'm going around a tight space i use 1/4" wide green masking from NAPA. works great for around corners

3m blue painters tape. Mine was 3/4in. But I was able to cut the tape a little to contour around the edges.
