Mercury Insurance
I switched from State Farm to Mercury, many years ago and have saved thousands of dollars. Check out Mercury - great customer service and rates.

It probably depends a lot on your coverage, driving record, where you are located, etc. I have been with State Farm for over 40 years and everytime I compare their prices to other companies including USAA they are considerably cheaper. Currently I am paying ~$250/ 6 months. I checked a year ago with several other companies including USAA (I have a home owners policy with them) and they were all over $100 per year more.

Allstate here, Been with them for 20 plus years, Everytime I shop around no one can beat the price I have now because I been with them for so long... It pays to stay with 1 insurance co for a long time in the long run.

As others have said, it depends. Your driving record, where you live and your insurance history all impact on what you will pay.
If you are eligible (active duty or retired military) definitely check USAA. For me it is a little more than $200 for six months with high policy limits and all the coverage.
Otherwise, check State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, Nationwide and the other majors. Be cautious of companies you haven't heard of. In these economic times you may discover you have no coverage when you really need it.
Multi car policies and policies that combine your homeowner (or renter) policy can also make a difference in total cost.

The bottom line is that we should all shop around every so often. I have a feeling that like the once popular AOL, State Farm knew they had to lower their rates or the exudus would hurt them, badly. Competition is certainly good for us consumers.

Been with state farm for over 20 years. I have compared with others in the past but as others have said nobody has been able to beat their price. I do have house multi-car and extra policy to cover jewelry.
And as others have stated location does play a part in the cost.

I did the switch around every 6 months. Did AIG for awhile. I liked the heck out of 21st(which is an AIG company). I loved them because for everyone I sent them I got a $50. giftcard. They screwed me on one deal so I switched to Mercury, I've been with them for 18 months.
None of the Majors came close to the rates of the three I mentioned.

I was with State Farm for several years until the Katrina in 05. I had both renterrs insurance and automobile and they did not cover the flood damage to my car or my Apt and belongings. I switch back to USAA when i bought my Vette in feb 04 and when Gustav hit us on Monday and then flooding on Wed. which got my pass side of the Vette wet and had about 3"'s of water in my Apt. I called USAA on Thursday, claims rep came on Friday and had the money deposited in my account on Monday. My Mom had State Farm and they would not cover any damage from riding flood water only if it came through the roof.

Quotes will vary.........
I was with Farmers Ins for years and had a big claims ( shop fire w/ two vettes in storage), they paid off very well and without question.
I now live in Oregon and South Dakota and use AIG( thru Grundy) for daily drivers and the motorcoach, but use Grundy for my collector cars because of the aggreed value. Not anymore expensive than Framers in Kalifornia.
